CREOMUI^SION relieves Coughs, Chest Colds, Acute Bronchitis Judge Gives Stern Lecture, But Allows Suspended Sentences Two soldiefs and two civilian youths, their ages ranging from 16 to 23, pled guilty in Moore Superior Court to a series of break-ins and robbery of business places in Moore county. Another soldier, James C. Wart, Jr., 25, of Fort Bragg and Jones boro, Route 8, pled not guilty and the case was nol-prossed later in the term. Standing before Judge Allen H, Gwyn, they received one of the sternest, lectures ever delivered by a jurist in the court. He said: “What we do to you here, or fail to do, may have a bearing on the actions of other young men who 'are considering committing just such crimes as yours. “But if we turned you loose to day,” the judge went on, “you haven’t won. There is no way in the world for you to win this case. You must change yourselves from the inside—no easy job.” Four Sentenced Judge Gwyn handed sentences as follows to the four youths: George Melieus, Jr., 23, Fort Bragg, eight months on the roads on the first count, the rest con solidated for an 18-months sen tence, suspended for five years on good behavior conditions, to be gin at the expiration of his active service on the roads; Char'es Lloyd, Jr., 17, Sanford, the same, except 24 instead of 18 months; U G. Wallace, Fort Bragg, prayer for judgment continued for five years, defendant to be turned over to military authorities to be dealt with according to military -law; Edward Lee Hinesley, Jr., 16, Sanford, 12 months suspended for five years on strict probationary conditions, ordered to appear at court in January, 1960, to show the) conditiO’HS to have been ful filled, and in the meantime to 45th Anniversary BOY SCOUTS of AMERICA Congratulations and all good wishes to the Boy Scouts and their leaders, KEITH HARDWARE CO. Telephone 2711 VASS. N. C. make a $500 bond for such ap pearance, paying it to the clerk of court in $5 weekly instalments, the full amount to be returned to him on his appearance at court five - years hence. The bond, similar to several others imposed by Judge Gwyn during the one-week term, was, he emphasized, “neither a fine nor at penalty” but by way of a re ward for the frugality and indus try the sentence was designed to inspire. Warf was turned over to wait ing Lee County authorities who wanted him in connection with two break-ins in that county. He admitted to officers at first that he had driven the car used by Melieus and Lloyd in their rob bery of Nick’s Cleaners at Vass, though later he said he had fallen asleep in the car and did not know what the others were do ing. They stole a .38 caliber pistol and 12-gauge shotgun, cigars, cig arettes, minor amounts of cash, two sets of tools valued at $150 and $300, and, from Nick’s Clean ers at Vass, men’s, women’s and children’s clothing. Loot Hidden At Bragg Practically all the loot was re covered from hiding placs in Fort Bragg barracks, officers said. Appearing against the men in the Moore court were Albert Cole, proprietor of Cole and Phillips Service Station, also Danny’s Grill, both of which had been robbed, between Cameron and Vass; Buddy McRae, of McRae’s Store, Vass; Sidney Lane, of Lane’s Garage, Southern Pines; also Deputy Sheriff A. F. Dees and an SBI agent. The arrests were made about three weeks ago at Sanford and Fort Bragg after a week of in tensive investigation by officers of Moore, Lee and Chatham coun ties, with SBI assistance. The outbreak of robberies extended into Lee and Chatham, and two of those arrested admitted also thefts at Greensboro. Warf, who was found to be AWOL, and Wallace are wanted in Lee County, Melius and Lloyd in Chath^ and Guilford, and a sixth man, William C. Jones, 21 also a soldier, is wanted in Chat ham and Guilford, the SBI agent said. Hinesley participated ini break-ins only in Moore. The thefts were apparently made with no plan for disposal or use of the loot, officers report ed. At two or three places broken into, nothing was stolen. Still to be solved are several other robberies of similar nature, committed about the same time, w'hich officers said apparently had no connection with those be fore the court. Investigation of these is continuing. During 1954 records indicate that 21,794 fishermen used the cooperative wildlife management areas of western North Carolina, catching 92,460 trout. 1 -tlaiil PINT $3.40 % OT.
