The award was made at a bat talion parade. The commendation was published and presented in the presence of the Cadet Corps and visitors. Going out in 39, Smith was 3-up at the turn. Lesser rallied briefly at the 10th and gained 1 hole back, but Smith’s par 4 at the 11th gave her the 3-up margin again. A par 4 at the 12th sent Smith 4-up, the tallest lead of the day. Lesser chopped off 1 with a M Rare first major amateur triumph, fired 2 straight pars at Lesser to end the match at 16. Miss Margaret Burns, Greens- bbro, defeated Miss Pippi Rooney, Jamaica Plain, Mass. 1-up, 21st, to win the President’s Division- Mrs. Norma Shook, Morganton, defeated Mrs. Frank Cush, Wash ington, D. C., 6 and 5, to take the Governor’s Division, and Mrs. J. Walker Hoopes, Wilmington, Del. won 2 up from Miss Dorothy Ann Baldwin, Brooklyn, N. Y. in the Consolation. Miss Smith succeeds Joyce Ziske of Wlaterford, Wis., as Women’s North and South Cham pion. The El Canada, Calif., g^rl reached the finals by defeating another Californian, Barbara Ro- mack, national amateur champ from Sacramento. Miss Smith is the 1954 Juniors champion. Miss Lesser set back Miss Mary Ann Downey of Baltimore, Md., in the semi-finals. Joint Owners Can Vote May 7 On Peach Proposal If a husband and wife, are joint owners on a farm growing peach es and share in the proceeds of the crop, both are eligible to vote in the Sandhills Peach referen dum to be held on May 7. The referendum was called by the N. C. Peach Growers Society for the purpose of voting on whether the growers would as sess themselves one cent per tree (four years or older), with the money to be used for promoting the sale, consumption and use of peaches. All farmers producing peaches on a commercial basis in the fol lowing counties are eligible to vote: Richmond, Montgomery, Anson, Scotland, Hoke, Lee, Moore, and Cumberland. Owners, tenants and sharecroppers of farms on which peaches are pro duced during the year 1955 are eligible to vote in the referen dum. A person who has more than one farm producing peaches is entitled to only one vote, hew ever. If the assessment is approved by the necessary two-thirds or more voting, the Commissioner of Agriculture will be responsible for collecting the money annual ly for the years 1955, 1956, and 1957.
