When fertilizer is applied in a
vegetable garden as deep as the
soil is spaded or plowed, it en
courages plant roots to develop
well below the surface where
greater moisture! can be obtained.
This method is particularly ef
fective for commercial fertilizers.

UNC Students At
Work On Survey
Report Of Town
Graduate students from the
University of North Carolina’s
Department of City and Regional
Planning spent last week comple
ting their land use survey here.
The survey extends and brings
up to date another made by UNC
students in 19,51. It is part of the
training course of the students
and costs the town only the
amount of their actual expenses,
not in any case to exceed $500.
Information and technical ad
vice on future expansion of the
town, population trends, zoning
and the proposed new route of
No. 1 highway through Southern
Pines are expected to pome from
the survey.
During the survey, the students
looked over the by-pass route and
the “way the town fits into the
landscape” aiid drove over near
ly all streets of the town with
Town Manager Tom E. Cunning
ham and Bill Wilson, building in
spector, plotting on a map the lo
cation of business, residential and
public buildings. The survey ex
tends out from town about a mile.
The students are Miss Ruth L.
Mace of Chapel Hill, Arthur H.
Fawcett, Jr., of Annapolis, Md.,
Alan D. Goodwin of Rose Hill,
Pa., and William R. Rugg of
Massachusetts.
Next month, Cunningham, Wil
son and possibly ether town offi
cials will go to Chapel Hill to
hear a report by the students. It
is expected the report will be
printed later and will be avail
able locally.
A new cheinical, Panagen, is
recommended this year for the
first time in North Carolina for
oak smut and barley stripe. In
tests, the new treatment gave
complete control. Two other
chemicals now recommended also
give complete control.
