posts 24 hours per day through 5
p.m., Friday in a five-state test
exercise for the aircraft warning
service. David Drexel heads the
Corps’ activities in Moore, with
posts at Southern Pines, Aber
deen, Pinehurst, Carthage and
Eagle Springs.
Under the direction of Harry
Chatfield, local Corps head, vol
unteers are keeping constant
watch of the skies at the N. C.
Forest Service fire tower off Mor-
ganton Road, during the period
of the exercise. More than a doz
en volunteers from the John Boyd
Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars,
have greatly aided the work here,
he said this week. Both men and
women are serving with the group
and more are needed to assure ef
ficient operation of the post.
Air Activity Reported
The exercise is conducted by the
35th Air Division, with headquar
ters at Marietta, Ga., to test the ef
fectiveness of the Ground Obser
ver Corps in the Southeastern
United States. Th/s exercise, nick
named “Operation Early Spring,”
will be a preparation for “Opera
tion Skywatch” which is to go into
effect in the near future.
During the exercise, aircraft of
the Air National Guard, Civil Air
Patrol and the United States Air
Force fly designated “Flight Mis
sions” over the Southeastern area.
