Coming Sunday through Wed

heart-warming, appealing comedy
-drama peopled with believable
characters, “The Catered Affair”
based on the TV play by Paddy
Chayefsky, of Academy Award
winning “Marty” fame, starring
Ernest Borgnine, Bette Davis,
Debby Reynolds and Barry Fitz
gerald.
This latest excursion into the
folkways of the Bronx is a moving
and hilarious film. It is a story
of great heart concerning a taxi
cab driver, Borgnine, his wife.
Miss Davis, and their daughter.
Miss Reynolds, whose plans to get
married almost wreck the family,
economiically and spiritually.
It’s not that the parents object
to the marriage—they both ap
prove—but when the mother
prove—but when the mother
wants to give her daughter the
kind of catered affair which she
herself never had, the) fireworks
start .
Because of the cost, Borgnine
must give up his plans to buy his
own cab. Because of the avail
ability of the ballroom, the mar
riage must be postponed two
months, thus denying the impat
ient couple a chance for the
honeymoon. The complications
and confusions snowball until it
seems the very marriage itself is
threatened.
As the somewhat plodding cab
bie, Borgnine shows definitely
that his Academy Award was no
fluke. He is funny, warmhearted
and always honest. Miss Rey
nolds, who may be a much better
actress than anyone has ever be
lieved, is just about perfect. Barry
Fitzgerald, as the uncle of the
family who lives in, plays a
broad comedy style that gives
pace and punch to the under
statement of the others.
SUNRISE
Mickey Rooney, who is the new
co-star of Francis, the famous
talking mule in “Francis in the
Haunted House,” the Universal-
International comedy opening
Sunday at the Sunrise theatre, is
a firm believer in series films,
and he has plenty of reason to
bejlieve in them.
Although he has played out
standing roles in many a notable
movie production, he realizes
himself that his popularity really
zoomed to a new high during the
years he was starring in the
“Andy Hsrdy” series at M-G-M.
He appeared in fourteen of
these pictures before the series
. \
was finally ended because he de
cided that he had become too ma
ture for his role. From first to
last these pictures were fantastic
moneymakers.
It was this experience, he will
td-1 you, that made him eager to
become identified with U-I’s pop
ular “Francis” series when the
opportunity presented itself.
“As this is the seventh ‘Fran
cis’ picture,” he remarked One
day on the set, “some people may
think I’m coming in a little late.
I certainly don’t think so, how
ever. After all, even after four
teen of them, there’s no telling
how long the ‘Andy Hardy’ pic
tures could have gone on if I
hadn’t decided that I was getting
too old to play a teen-age char
acter.
1‘If the quality is sustained,
there is really no telling how long
a series can last. Once the public
has taken a particular set of
characters to its heart, these char
acters seem to be, for all practi
cal purposes, immortal.
