The index of prices received by
North Carolina farmers rose two
points during the month ending'
in mid-September, say marketing
specialists with the North Caro
lina Crop Reporting Service.
Higher prices received by farm
ers for tobacco, cotton, and milk
were primarily responsible for
the increase during the month.
The little town of Brevard, in
the mountains of North Carolina,
was incorporated in 1867 with
seven voters, every one of whom
held office.

Conviction In Manslaughter Case
Gets Man 7-Year Term Last Week
Samuel Gaston Taylor, plead
ing guilty to a manslaughter
charge in the closing sessions of
Moore criminal court last week,
received a sentence of seven
years in prison, suspended for
five years on various conditions,
the^chief one being that he pay
$2,500 to the mother of his vic
tim.
Taylor was the driver of a car
which struck and killed his 16-
year-old cousin, Clato Alexander
Taylor, in front of a Negro
church near Carthage August 2,
1955. There was talk at the time
that Taylor had “nm down” the
boy on purpose though this was
not indicated by trial testimony.
Eye witnesses described, how
ever, how the boy had tried to
dodge the oncoming car, which
struck him with such force his
body was tossed over a hedge,
falling some distance away.
Taylor was also ordered to pay
$290 for funeral expenses. He
was to pay $150 when sentenced,
then the same amount every 90
days until the full amount of $2,-
790 is paid off, carrying in the
meanwhile a life insurance policy
for $2,500 with Clato’s mother as
beneficiary.
This was one of a number of
cases Judge Walter E. Crissman
of High Point clicked off on the
last two days of the regular term,
considerably lightening the dock
et.
In another case, old-time liquor
offender Grace King McArthur
of Southern Pines pleaded hot
guilty to a liquor law violation
charge, then was found to have
a suspended sentence hanging
over her from a 1953 .court judg
ment. This came as a surprise to
her attorney, Joe Cox of Laurin-
burg, who stopped in the midst
of his pleadings to say, “Your
Honor, I was never more embar
rassed in my life.” The revelation
was made by ABC Officer Kieth
Marks in reading the woman’s
record from the stand. After con
siderable discussion of the matter
while the jury waited, the defen
dant resolved the situation by
pleading guilty. She was sen
tenced to 12 months in the Wom
en’s Division, with the 18 months
of the previously suspended sen
tence also ordered into effect.

liquor laws, juror withdrawn,
mistrietl declared; Clifton Lane,
auto larceny, four months, to be
gin at expiration of sentence

(three counts), 18 months in
Women’s Division; Harold Eu
gene Evans, manslaughter (care
less and reckless driving causing
accident and death), dismissed
for lack of evidence; Jerome W.
Caddell, drunk driving, $100 and
costs with license revoked for 12
months; Bobby Deal, Harvey M.
Dowd, Roy Bums, violation of
prohibition, sentences ordered
into effect (two to five years in
prison for Deal on larceny
charges, 12 months each for
Dowd and Burns); Esther McKay
Deloria, driving without license,
$25 and costs; Ed McNeill, ac
cepting money on false pretense,
five months.
James Prim Named
To Student Gov’t
At State College
James Prim, son of Mr. and
Mrs. James Prim of Southern
Pines, was recently elected a
representative from the School
of Engineering at State College
to the student government.
One of six such representa
tives, Prim stood second highest

ern Pines High School, he is
presently attending State on a
$2,000 “Talent for Service” schol
arship.
He is a member of the crack
ROTC drill team at the college
and will take part in the annual
Carrousel in Charlotte tomorrow.

North Carolina farmers for most
feed items, with the exception of
cornmeal, were lower or un
changed during the month end
ing September 15. Prices paid for
16 and 18 per cent protein dairy
feeds were five cents per hun
dred below August. The higher
protein dairy feeds and all poul
try feeds iremained on the samt
level as the previous month. |
