FB7 MRS. ALONZO BLUE
Tonor Retiring Pastor
The Rev. William Sidney Gold
en, for the past 28 years pastor of
the Carthage Presbyterian Church,
was honored Sunday evening at
special services in the church, as
he was retiring from the active
pastorate of the church on Janu
ary 1.
The Rev. Walker Healy, Pres
byterian pastor of FayetteviUe
First Church, brought an inspir
ing message, taking as his text the
words “There was a man sent
from God, whose name was John.”
The Rev. C. K. Taffe of Cam
eron and the Rev. Charlie Worth
of Whiteville, former local pastors,
and the Rev. George Houck, of
West End, were on the program.
Beautiful music was rendered
by the choir with Miss Mary Lou
ise McDonald directing and Mrs.
L. R. Sugg at the organ. Favorite
hymns of Mr. Golden were used.
Following the sermon, a silver
service was presented Mr. and
Mrs. Golden by W. W. Dalrymple,
in behalf of the church.
A reception followed in the din
ing room of the Sunday School
building with friends from town
and throughout the county paying
their respects to Mr. and Mrs.
Golden.
Tribute to Mrs. Golden
At the Sunday School hour Sun-;
day morning in the Carthage Pres
byterian Church, Mrs. W. S. Gold-
,en was presented a gift, a beauti
ful serving tray, by the Sunday
School, in recognition of her faith
ful service as superintendent of
the Nursery Department. Boys
and girls now grown had her for
their first Sunday School teacher.
They stood in a group and sang
songs learned under Mrs. Golden.
Mrs. Duncan McPherson, who
has ably served as assistant teach
er in the class for several years,
will assume the duties of the Nur
sery Department.
Mrs. Golden has always been
helpful in all the work of the
church. She served as adult ad
visor for two years to the young
people and suggested and promot
ed plans that enabled a number to
attend young peoples’ conferences.
She has been a member of the
choir almost ever since coming to
Carthage. She was active in re
cruiting young people for the
choir. She made the patterns for
the first choir vestments and made
half of them herself. She donated
nine of the first tailormade vest
ments bought for the choir and is
still faithful in attendance at all
weekly choir rehearsals, and sings
in the choir.
-Shejias worked for most of the
yearsC^ice she has been in Car
thage as Circle chairman, kept in
close touch with aU her circle
members and always had an ac
tive and generous circle. She is
still a Circle chairman.
Mrs. Golden wil continue her
fine work in church, Sunday
School, choir and Women of the
Church.
Although the Rev. Mr. Golden
has retired from the active pastor
ate of the church, they will be in
their new home on Sunset Drive
and their interest in the church
will continue.
