.ARTHAGE NEWS FB7 MRS. ALONZO BLUE Tonor Retiring Pastor The Rev. William Sidney Gold en, for the past 28 years pastor of the Carthage Presbyterian Church, was honored Sunday evening at special services in the church, as he was retiring from the active pastorate of the church on Janu ary 1. The Rev. Walker Healy, Pres byterian pastor of FayetteviUe First Church, brought an inspir ing message, taking as his text the words “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.” The Rev. C. K. Taffe of Cam eron and the Rev. Charlie Worth of Whiteville, former local pastors, and the Rev. George Houck, of West End, were on the program. Beautiful music was rendered by the choir with Miss Mary Lou ise McDonald directing and Mrs. L. R. Sugg at the organ. Favorite hymns of Mr. Golden were used. Following the sermon, a silver service was presented Mr. and Mrs. Golden by W. W. Dalrymple, in behalf of the church. A reception followed in the din ing room of the Sunday School building with friends from town and throughout the county paying their respects to Mr. and Mrs. Golden. Tribute to Mrs. Golden At the Sunday School hour Sun-; day morning in the Carthage Pres byterian Church, Mrs. W. S. Gold- ,en was presented a gift, a beauti ful serving tray, by the Sunday School, in recognition of her faith ful service as superintendent of the Nursery Department. Boys and girls now grown had her for their first Sunday School teacher. They stood in a group and sang songs learned under Mrs. Golden. Mrs. Duncan McPherson, who has ably served as assistant teach er in the class for several years, will assume the duties of the Nur sery Department. Mrs. Golden has always been helpful in all the work of the church. She served as adult ad visor for two years to the young people and suggested and promot ed plans that enabled a number to attend young peoples’ conferences. She has been a member of the choir almost ever since coming to Carthage. She was active in re cruiting young people for the choir. She made the patterns for the first choir vestments and made half of them herself. She donated nine of the first tailormade vest ments bought for the choir and is still faithful in attendance at all weekly choir rehearsals, and sings in the choir. -Shejias worked for most of the yearsC^ice she has been in Car thage as Circle chairman, kept in close touch with aU her circle members and always had an ac tive and generous circle. She is still a Circle chairman. Mrs. Golden wil continue her fine work in church, Sunday School, choir and Women of the Church. Although the Rev. Mr. Golden has retired from the active pastor ate of the church, they will be in their new home on Sunset Drive and their interest in the church will continue. Bail^smal Rites Linda Marie and Joyce Chris tine Scott, small daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Harry N. Scott, were baptized Sunday morning at the 11 o’clock worship service in the Carthage Presbyterian Church by the Rev. W. S. Golden. 47th Wedding Anniversary Mr .and Mrs. Walton G. Sugg observed their 47th wedding anni versary Sunday, December 30, at their home in Sanford. Their First Christmas Tree The boarding home for children, operated by Mrs. Oma Blanchard in Carthage, was a happy place on Christmas morning, when the four little children viewed their first Christmas tree and found Santa had paid them a visit. Mrs. Blanchard wishes to thank the Baptist and Presbyterian Churches and the Gospel Chapel for the cheer they brought to these children on Christmas morning. Personals Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Burt and Mrs. Helena Harrington Kennedy of Rsdeigh were holiday visitors in the home of Mrs. A. T. Lewis. Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Adams were in Charlotte Wednesday and Thursday with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Muse and son of Charlotte visited Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sinipson and Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Muse over the New Year holidays. Mrs. Herbert Myers and son George of Candor were here Sun day night to attend the service and reception honoring the Rev. and Mrs. W. S. Golden at the Presby terian Church. Mrs. Samuel Hope and small son of Boston, Mass., are spending this week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Wallace. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hume, who are now part-time residents of Oxford, spent the holidays at their home here. W. A. Blue left Monday for Gainesville, Ga., after spending the holidays at home. Mrs. Blue and the children will be here, for several days before returning to Beaufort, S. C. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Sugg, Mrs. Margaret Blue and Mr. and Mrs. Wendel Chaffen of Sanford, all former members of the Carthage Presbyterian Church, attended the Sunday evening service of the church and the reception honoring the Rev. and Mrs. W. S. Golden. Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Hunt of High Point,. Misses Mfna and Cuma Harriss of Fayetteville, Mr. and Mrs. Glendon Porter of Greens boro, Mr. and Mrs. Herman A. Campbell and Miss Nancy Camp bell of Pinehurst visited Mrs. Lu- cien P. Tyson during the holiday season. Shockley Adams is spending this week at his home here while his ship is in port at Boston, Mass. Mrs. M. G. Dalrymple is home after a 10-day visit with Mr. and Mrs. Temple Dalrymple in New Y ork. Miss Ruth Baity of Greensboro was the Sunday guest of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Adams. Mrs. Lucien P. Tyson and Miss Ruth Tyson went to High Point Saturday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Tyson’s aunt, Mrs. Julius Ward Harriss. Mr. and Mrs. L. B.
