Representative—Southern Pines THE PILOT American Legion Membership Drive Adds 11 To Rolls Eleven new members have joined Sandhill Post 134 of the American Legion, it was report ed at the February meeting of the organization last week by the present commander, Captain A. R. McDaniel- of Southern Pines, through whose efforts all 11 were added to the rolls. In addi tion, several veterans renewed their membership. “This sets a record for the lo cal post and a precedent among established posts in North Caro lina, of which Southem Pines’ is one of the oldest,” said Ed Cox, membership chairman. “Total membership is now 40, and though it is'considerably under that of pre-war years, it is most encouraging,” Cox added. A Naval officer in World War 1, McDaniel is making special ef forts to encourage the recording of service serial numbers and dates of service, whether the veteran is a member of the Le gion or not, for use in emergen cies that may arise where the government may be of assist ance. Captain McDaniel, who heads the 1957 membership drive, said; “To learn more about the many benefits to which veterans and their families are entitled,. we urge you to join the American Legion. To do so will cost you less than half of one pack of cig arettes each week.” The drive for new members is stiU in progress, but Captain Mc Daniel has already earned a seat at the “Go-Getters Banquet” next month, which recognizes outstanding records in securing new members.
