Neill McKeithen,
Aberdeen Native,
Dies In Lumberton
Neill A. McKeithen, 58, broth
er of E. T. McKeithen of Aber
deen, died of a heart attack late
Wednesday.
A native of Aberdeen, Mr. Mc
Keithen was a fanner, merchant
and tobacconist of Lumberton.
He was a veteran of World War 1
and a former president of the
Robeson Coimty Association of
the N. C. State College Alumni.
Though bom in Aberdeen, he
was reused in Carthage. He had
been in business in Lumberton
for many years.
Surviving are his wife; his
mother, Mrs. Mary Pleasants Mc
Keithen of Carthage; his brother,
E. T. of Aberdeen; and four sis
ters, Misses Annie and Frances
McKeithen, Mrs. Mary Clegg and
Mrs. Norman Carter, all Of Car
thage.
Superior Court Judge W. A.
Leland McKeithen of Pinehurst
and Jere McKeithen of Aber
deen are nephews.
Funeral arrangements had not
! been annoxmced this morning.

Carthage Jaycees
Agam To Sponsor
Soap Box Derby
To Be Held July

The Carthage Junior Chamber
of Commerce has announced plans
for the annual Soap Box Derby,
which it will sponsor again this
year July 20.
All boys between the ages of 11
and 15 have been invited by the
Carthage club to participate in
the event, the winner- of which
wiU be given a trip Greensboro
to compete in the district finals.
Winner of the Greensboro event
will receive a free trip to the na
tional finals in Akron, Ohio, later
in the summer.
First place winner in Carthage
will receive a $50 cash prize, with
$35 going to the second place
winner. Third place will receive
$15.
Pickup stations for wheels and
instmetions will be located at
Jud’s TV Service in Carthage,
Belk-Cline’s stqye in Robbins, and
the Pinehurst Garage in Pine-
hhrst. The Southern Pines sta
tion win be announced later.
Total costs for the wheels and
steering columns, possible con
testants were reminded, is $19.
Business concerns throughout the
county have been urged by the
Jaycees to sponsor at least one
contestant.
An entry fee of $1 will be
charged.
The Jaycees inaugurated the
Soap Box Derby -^wo years ago.
Last year’s winner was Gayle
Frye of Carthage.

Glenn G. Dickenson, commander of the 95th Military Govern^
ment Group after being graduated from the Advanced Leaders
School recently at Fort Gordon, Ga. Sgt. Hooker entered the
Army in October, 1947, and was stationed at Fort Benning prior
to entering Fort Gordon for the three week course. He is the
son of Mrs. Addie Hooker of Dallas, Texas. His wife, Myrtle,
lives on Route 1, Jackson Springs. '
Tom Wicker One of 11 Newspapermen
To Be Awarded Nieman Scholarships
Tom Wicker, author and
Washington correspondent for
the Winston-Salem Journal, is
one of 11 newspapermen in the
country this year awarded Nie
man Fellowships for study at
Harvard University.
Wicker lived here in 1948 and
served as the executive secretary
of the Chamber of Commerce. He
later went to Aberdeen and
worked on the Sandhill Citizen.
Since, he has worked on the
Lumberton newspaper, the Win-
.ston-Salem Journal, and has
served as director of information
for the State Board of Public
Welfare.
He is the author of five books,
two of which have received na
tional acclaim, “The Kingpin,”
and. published in January, “The
Devil Must.”
At Harvard, which he will at
tend for one year, he will study
American government and econ-

Today For Mrs.
Annie McMillan
Mrs. Annie McMillan, 68, of Vass
died ill the Moore County Hospital
Tuesday. She was born in Cum
berland County, the daughter of
the late 4rchie A. and Cather
ine McLaughlin McNeill.
Funeral services were held
from the chapel of Powell
funeral home in Southern Pines,
with her pastor, the Rev. A. D.
Carswell officiating, assisted by
the Rev. Trivette of Vass, and
the Rev. Carl Wallace of Fay
etteville. Interment followed in
Cypress Church Cemetery.
She is survived by her hus
band, John M. McMillan; three
daughters, Mrs. J. E. Parker Jr,,
and Mrs. W. B. Kirby of Fayette
ville and Mrs. William Black-
bum Of Lakeview; seven grand
children; two sisters, Mrs. F. L.
Dees of Portsmouth, Va., Mrs. N.
Southerland of Wallace, and
two brothers, Frank and Dan
McNeill of Vass.
