ONCE MORE. THE RACKET MOVES IN
Bound To High Court On Charges Of
Selling Phony Mag Subscriptions
BLESSING CEREMONIES of the new
Mid Pines Golfotel were conducted Saturday
morning of last week by Father McCarthy, new
pastor of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, as
Frank Cosgrove, Mid Pines owner, Mr. and Mrs.
Peter Blasoo, operators of the Golfotel, and
Father Colgan of St. Joseph’s Hospital look on.
The luxurious facilities, opened earlier this
year, contain 10 units and a manager’s office.
The Golfotel is remaining open for the sum
mer months, Mr. Cosgrove said, for golf parties'
and others who wish to use the club’s facili
ties. ^ (Pilot photo)
Melvin Banning, 29-year-old
resident of Old Fort, is in jail at
Carthage this week in lieu of
$1,000 bond he was required to
make after he waived a hearing
on charges he obtained money
under false pretenses.
The offense, which is a felony,
will be tried in Moore Superior
Court in the August term.
Banning, who represented him
self as a magazine subscription
salesman to farmers in the High-
falls section, was arrested by Old
Fort police last week at the re
quest of Moore officials. He was
arrested on warrants stwom out by
four residents of Highfalls, aU of
whom had been bilked.
Charles McLeod, a Carthage
magistrate whom Banning, was
brought before for the prelimi
nary hearing, said the Old Fort
police department described Ban
ning as having a long record.
He said that Banning, who has
only one leg, had told the High
falls residentsi in March that he
represented the Periodical Subs
cription Company of Dayton,
Ohio. He obtained money for
subscriptions to Life, Newsweek,
Speed Age, Farm Journal, and the
Saturday Evening Post. When the
magazines were not delivered in
more than two months, McLeod
said, several of the people who
had subscribed became alarmed.
One wrote the company but the
letter was returned meirked “no
such address.” One of them had
obtained the license number to
Banning’s car and it was only be
cause of that fact that he could be
traced.
Banning, it weis reported, had
told prospective clients that he
was seUfng subscriptions beqause
“he wanted to get enough money
to return to school,” that he was
“going to have an operation,”
and that he was a victim of polio
and “unable to work.”
Officials in the Sheriif’s office
are still investigating and have
no idea as to the total number he
bilked before leaving the coun
ty. •
