Page TEN THE PILOT—Scmthern Pines, North Carotoia THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1957 Local Lions Club Participating In Annual ‘White Cane’ Drive In State ITie Southern Pines Lions Club has joined with more th^p 14,000 ether Lions of North Caijplina in launching the annual ‘'White Cane” drive for the North Caro lina State Association for the Blind. The Southern Pines drive, headed by Calvin Howell, local architect, was launched Septem ber 22, and will continue through October 5. According to Howell, this year the state goal is $40,000. The funds raised will go to provide many services for the blind, in cluding glasses and other visual aids, radios for blind shut-ins, eyecare, medical services, and white cane walking sticks. This yeai the association is es tablishing and operating a re gional library for the distribution of talking-book records and books and literature in Braille. All these services are essential but the association, according to Howell, feels that an expanded prevention of blindness program will be the greatest service that could be rendered to the citizens of North Carolina. Each year through the loyalty and support of Lions, the associ ation has expanded its services and rendered aid to thousands of blind and visually handicapped I persons. In 1956, .there were 25,- ‘509 such persons aided. Every member of this commu- 'nity will be given an opportuni ty to join the “White Cane” drive I during the campaign, Howell said. Memberships in the Associ ation will be sold as well as tiny “White Cane” bangles. rrTTT'— The topography of North Caro lina causes more diversity in cli- ■mate than differences in latitude cause. Some mountain districts of North Carolina receive more i rainfall than any other place east of the Rockies. Dr. William T. Scott, superin tendent of the Southern Conven tion of Congregational Christian Churches, Elon College, will be moderator of an Installation Service for the Rev. Carl E. Wal lace at the Church of Wide Fel lowship Sunday at 7:30 p. m. Assisting Dr. Scott in the ser vice will be Martin Garren, Greensboro, president of the Southern Convention; the Rev. Earl Farrell, Fuquay, secretary of the Eastern North Carolina Conference of Christian Church es; Dr. Will B. O’Neill, Sanford; Dr. Cheves Ligon, Southern Pines; and mayor W. E. Blue, Southern Pines. A reception in the Fellowship Hall of the church will follow the installation service, to which the public is invited. ’ r 6ld$tagg KENTUCKY STRAIGHT BOURBON 86 PROOF . STAGG DIST.
