ROHANEN CANCELS Blue Knights Drop Opening Court Came To Fast Breaking Goldsboro PfrifXS milf» ^ Tn The Southern Pines Blue Knights opened their 1958 cage sejison Tuesday night by absorb ing two drubbings at the hands of Goldsboro, an AAA school which, rating wise, is two knotches above the locals. Scores were 55-28 in the Jayvee game, 78-33 in the varsity encoun ter. Coach W. A. Leonard said the games were of great benefit to his charges, particularly in demon strating what the Blue Knights could expect when they meet a team that employs the fast break. C. MiimosE RABE In the varsity game Goldsboro utilized a fast break on offense and forced the comparatively in experienced Blue Knights into many errors. Forward Bobby Watkins with six points, and guards Everett Cushman and Rob ert Woddruff, with eight each, led the scoring for Southern Pines. Reserve guard Jimmy Carter had four, forward Bill ^ymour had three, and center Jesse Williford had two. For Gdldsboro, Ellis had 14 and O’Daniel had 12. The rest of the points were fairly well scattered throughout the rest of the players. In the Jayvee game Ted Ward led the scoring for Southern Pines with six points. Melva Hall had five and Dick Thomasson had four to lead the rest of the pack. Five of the seven players Leon ard used most in the varsity game were sophomores and two were juniors. The games, which attracted a fair drowd, were “make-up” events, scheduled at the last min ute when Rohanen of Rocking ham cancelled. Rites Conducted At West End For Mrs. E. P. Hinson Mrs. Josephine Von Canon Hinson, 52, of West End, died Saturday in Duke Hospital. She was the daughter of the late J. B. and Amanda Tysinger Von Canon. She was a member of the West End Methodist Church, where funeral services were held Monday, with the Rev. T. H. Lajrfield, pastor, officiating. Surviving are her husband, E. P. Hinson; one son, John Henry and one daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Cox. both of West End; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. W. A. Johnson and Mrs. Ethel Davis, both of West End; three brothers, J. B. and Paul Von Can on, both of West End and Fred Von Canon of Sanford. Mrs. Hinson’s father, J. B. Von Canon, was the founder of the Sandhill Furniture Corpora tion. In its early days Mrs. Hin son, a director of the company, had served as its bookkeeper, and always took an active inter est in the firm’s activities. She was a designer of note and v/as one of the best gardeners in the area.
