The Bethlehem Club met April
16 at the home of Mrs. Earl
Dowd. A program on “The Care
of Our Clothes” was given by
Mrs. Dowd. It was good to hear
of ways to preserve and care for
our clothes at a time' when
clothes are so costly.
After the business ' meeting
Mrs. Dowd served refreshments
and for the entertainment, she
showed us “How to break a
bank” legally. Several of our
members attended the district
meeting at Coats, March 5.—^By

Lions Convention
Here In June To
Bring 1,000 Plus
Local officials for the State
Lions Convention, which will be
held here June 8-10, reported to
day that the majof portions of
the convention planning have
been successfully worked out
and all that remains are a
few minor details.
Between 1100 and 1500 ‘dele
gates and their wives are expect-
eded for the three-day event, lo
cal Lions said, making it the
largest ever held here. Almost
all hotel and motel rooms are al
ready booked; within the next
few days it is expected that not
a single room will be available.
Lions on the housing comm'.ttee
have already started inquiring
ground beef, steamed rice, cole
slaw, bread, milk, peach cobbler.
Friday — Fish salad, macaroni
with cheese, greens, corn muf
fins, milk.
about facilities in private homes.
Tlie convention will have rep
resentatives from some 350 clubs
throughout the state. The local
club, composed of 35 members, is
acting as host with an assist from
several of the nearby org^iniza-
tions.
Joe Carter of Southern Pines,
state convention chairman, said
this week that thousands of man
hours had already gone into the
planning and ''‘many times that
will have been done prior to the
convention itself.” Murray Clark,
local president, has also been
working closely with the state
group, as has several other local
committees.
Pressd into service for the con
vention will be the high school.
Weaver Auditorium, the Nation
al Guard Armory and other
places. The Hollywood Hotel is
convention headquarters.
Carter, commenting on the pos
sibility that Southern Pines might
be “over-taxing” itself in inviting
such a large group here, said that
a survey had been made of avail-
abl facilities and the survey had
proven that the town could han
dle such a meeting.
“If we are succesful, and I’m
—
sure we will be,” he said, “it
will pave the way for future con
ventions of this magnitude here.
I see little reason to believe it
will over-tax the town.”
Economically, he pointed out,
that many people coming at what
is normally a slow time of year
will be a shot in the arm that lo
cal merchants and hotel, keepers
“could well use after what some
people are saying has been a bad
season.”
How much of a shot in the arm?
Carter said that if 1,000 people
came; a conservative estimate,
they would probably spend, for
lodging, meals, and incidentals,
at least $40,000 to $50,000 in the
three-day period. “That’s a lot of
money for a town this size,” he
said.
“Equally as valuable,’ he add
ed, “is the fact that many of
these delegates will go home and
talk about Southern Pines. What
they have to say is,^of course, up
to the people here arid what type
reception they give the delegates.
I am appealing to everyone well
in advance of the convention
date to start thinking about it,
knowing full well that we’ll be a
little crowded for a while, but
remembering at the same time
that this could mean much for
Southerh Pines and the sur
rounding area.”
