Family Reunion At
The C. E. Newtons
Is Delightful Event
Sunday was a happy—and live
ly—day for Mr. and Mrs. C. E.
Newton when for the first time in
17 years their five children were
at home at the same time, with
nine grandchildren to add to the
joy of the occasion.
Attending the reunion were Mr.
and Mrs. Edwin Newton and son,
Steve, of Greensboro; Mrs. C. D.
Smith (Catherine) of Andover,
Mass., her twin brother, John
Scott Newton, with his wife and
children, Scott, Everett and Eve
lyn, Mrs. Roland Jager (Lucille)
and sons, Roland, Jr., Richard,
Barry, Eric and Guy, ail of South
ern Pines; Richard Newton of Bir
mingham, Ala., and Miss Mary
Scott Newton, sister of the host.
Mrs. Newton, known for her
skill in the culinary art, assisted
by daughter Catherine, had pre
pared a dinner of the favorite
foods of the family which all en
joyed.

Has Wiener Roast
The Ruth Class of the First
Baptist Church enjoyed a wiener
•roast in connection with their
monthly meeting Tuesday evening
at the home of Mrs. William C.
Deaton.
Six guests were present: Miss

Charles Bridges, Mrs. Woodrow
McDonald, Mrs. Pat Hamel, Mrs.
Edward Brock, and Mrs. William

District 12 at Rockingham Tues
day.
Mrs. Ina Mae Powers of Mars
ton, district committeewoman,
presided. Miss Grace Donaldson
gave the invocation and Mrs. Dan
McNeill led the group in singing
the Star Spangled Banner.
The meeting opened at 10 a. m.
with a business session, followed
by a talk by the state president,
Mrs. Raymond Fuson of New
Bern. She spoke on various Aux
iliary projects and urge4 mem
bers to attend the state conven
tion in Asheville in June.

Bird Club Has
Interesting Trip
Friday Morning
The Bird Club went to the
home of Mrs. Arthur Tener in
Niagara Friday to enjoy her gar
den and bird visitors. A list of
58 species was made, seen during
the week by members of the club.
Mrs. Tener served iced Coke in
the garden, and the club appre
ciated her kind hospitality and
the chance to enjoy her azaleas
and other flowering shrubs as
well as her birds.
On the return trip a stop was
made at Mrs. Dean Dorman’s
where an evening grosbeak was
still enjoying the feeder. Mrs.
Dorman’s azaleas were also ad
mired by the visitors.
The morning ended with a
glimpse of the beautiful wisteria
growing up the trees in the gar
den of Mrs. J. F. Morris’s home
on West New York Avenue, which
• is also a bird paradise.
All who are interested in birds
are welcome to joih these bird
trips each Friday morning at 9:30,
starting from 160 South Ben
nett Street.
Baptist Church, Southern Pines,
will cooperate in the effort to
place greater emphasis on the im
portance of Christian education
in the home and to promote clos
er cooperation between church
and home.
Sunday, May 4, will be Chris
tian Home Day in the church
when an effort ■will be made to
lead every family to face up to
its need to make the home Christ-
centered.
A simple, but impressive, serv
ice of home dedication has been
mailed to each family in the
hope that the parents will lead^
in dedicating their homes to hon
oring Christ and to providing a
climate favorable to Christian
nurture. Monday, May 5, will be
Home Dedication Day.
At the mid-v^eek service Wed
nesday, May 7, the pastor, the
Rev. Maynard Mangum, -will
bring the fourth message in a
series on “Marriage and the
Christian Home.”
The ■yveek will be climaxed on
Sunday, May 11, by Family Day
in the church. Families will be
asked to sit together and families
with all members present will be
recognized. Following this there
will be, at the morning worship
hour, a brief dedication service
for babies who have come into
homes of members of the church
since last Mother’s Day.

A talented young pianist of
great promise is Janine Johnston,
11-year-old daughter of Mr. and
Mrs Williapi T. Johnston of Fay
etteville, who was selected from
Haymount Elementary School to
participate in the Kiwanis Club
Talent Night program there re
cently with other city and coun
tywide winners. In her piano

her orchestral accompanist was
Mrs. Burt Ishee of. Fayetteville.
Mr. and Mrs. George C. Moore
of Southern Pines are Janine’s
maternal grandparents, and
Mrs. Moore was present to hear
her play. Her other grandparents
are Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Johnston
of Ormand, Fla., formerly of

Mrs. Sontag Gives
Final Art Lecture
In Current Series
Mrs. Emanuel Sontag gave her
third and final art lecture TueS'
day to pupils of the fifth through
eighth grades of the Southern
Pines elementary school.
. In her first lecture, she taught
the use of color in painting. The
second dealt with an analysis of
composition, and Tuesday’s was
on art appreciation.
Mrs. Sontag traced the develop
ment of aft from prehistoric
times to the present, emphasizing
that the art produced in each age
reflected thfe spirit of that partic
ular age and that every age had
different problems that they were
trying to solve, pointing out that
we must have'tolerance in criti
cizing art that we may not under
stand.
Mrs. Sontag gave these talks
not only to stimulate the stu
dents’ interest in art but also to
perhaps incite others in the com
munity who have had experience
in other fields or who have crea
tive hobbies to come and expose
the children to them, to stimulate
interest in subjects beyond the
school curriculum.
Holmes Garden Near
Mt. Olive To Be Open ,
To Public Sunday

Entertain Bridge Club
Dr. and Mrs. James S. Milliken
entertained their bridge club Sat
urday night at their home on East
New Hampshire Avenue. Prior
to the game guests enjoyed a
stroll through the Milliken’s gar
dens, where hundred of tulips—
many of them in one huge bed—
were at the peak of their beauty,
with azaleas and pansies as added
attractions.
Enjoying the game and refresh
ments with the Millikens were Dr.
and Mrs. W. F. Hollister, Mr. and
Mrs. Harold A. Collins, Mr. and
Mrs. Lawrence Johnson and Mr.
and Mrs. Hoke Pollock, club mem

Mrs. Doris Betts
Of Sanford Awarded
Guggenheim Fellowship
Mrs. Doris Betts of Sanford,
who was scheduled to speak here
a few weeks ago and was tm-
able to come because of family
illness, has been awarded a Gug
genheim Fellowship in creative
writing.
Mrs. Betts was due to speak to
the Junior 'Woman’s club in
Southern Pines early in April.
She told Mrs. Norris Hodgkins,
Jr., that she hoped she would be
able to address the club at a later
date.
The Guggenheimi award will
enable Mrs. Betts to complete
work on a novel, her third book,
now in progress. Mrs. Betts won
the Sir Walter award in Decem
ber for the best book Of fiction
published by a North Carolinian
in 1957. The book was “Tall
Houses in Winter,” a first novel.
ALFRED MOORE CHAPTER
The Alfred Moore Chapter,
(Daughfters of the American
Revolution, will hold its final
meeting of the fiscal year on Sat
urday, May 10, at the home of
Mrs. C. T. Grier in Carthage at
2:30 p. m. Installation of officers
for the coming three years will
be held at the close of the meet
ing, which will be followed by
a tea. Meetings will be resumed
in the f^ll.

very proud of it.
The flower was the first of hun
dreds of memorial poppies distri
buted throughout Southern Pines
by the women of the American
Legion Auxiliary and other volun
teers, to be worn in honor of the
nation’s war dead.
The poppy was sold to Mayor
Blue by Jackie Browning, winner
of first prize in the Poppy Poster
contest. After Jackie pinned the
poppy on Mr. Blue’s lapel he said:
“This poppy means a lot in pay
ing tribute to the Southern Pines
boys we/lost in the wars. Being
a veteran myself I k,now what
they mean to the American Le
gion and the American Legion
Auxiliary.
“I hope you have a good sale
today and make a lot of money to
help the hospitalized veterans
who made these poppies in Fay
etteville. I wish you the best of
luck in your efforts.”
Receipts from the poppy sale
totaled $245.

sales chairman, with Mrs. J. S.
McLauchlin and Mrs. Veta E. Gor
man as assistants. Mrs. L. A.
Des Pland was chairman of the
Poppy Poster contest, and Mrs.
Dan R. McNeill managed the ra
dio and press publicity for the
project.-
As a preliminary, three high
school students, David Prim, Phyl
lis Garzik and Phil Guin, present
ed a play, “The Poppy Beds,” over
WEEB on the day prior to the
sale. Bright and early Saturday
a large number of adult volun
teers, school girls and boys were
dispensing the bright red flowers.
