A. Brown of Jackson Springs. Attending the funeral at Barbecue Church Saturday after noon from Jackson Springs were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Blue with Johnnie and Joyce, Mrs. E. J. Blue, Mrs. Geneva McLeod, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Graham, Oscar Richardson Jr. and Herbert Car ter. Mission Study The WSCS concluded a study course Thursday evening on “Concern of a Continent.” Mrs. A. J. Hanner, Missionary Educa- •tion chairman, was hostess to the group at her home and presented the study on Mexico, Hawaii and the Caribbean area in a unique way. For the study- of Mexico, Mrs. Hanner played Mexican music, served her guests tortillas followed by a talk on that coun try. Pineapple juice was served representing Hawaii with Helen Hanner, in costume, giving a Hula dance. Along with the dis cussion of the Caribbean area. Calypso music was played and the guests were served bananas. Robert Clark served as an ush- i er in the wedding of Mrs. George fcooper Franklin to Bailey Sher wood Rich at the Fairmont Methodist Church ' in Raleigh Sunday afternoon. Clark and Miss Evelyn Hol liday. * Sunday dinner guests of Misses Edith and Vista Markham were Mrs. John Gibson with Rufus and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Burton and Barbara, all of Laurel Hill, ' Bill Graham ahd Miss Julia Mae Graham, both of Charlotte, were at home for the weekend with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Graham. Neil Thompson, pas tor of the Methodist Church of Lake Waccamaw, spoke to the I^A Monday evening on the Boys Home of his town. Devo tions were led by the Rev. Paul Buzard, pastor of the Bensalem and Eagle Springs Churches. The group enjoyed a social hour with D. L. Ritter serving on the Hos pitality Committee., Floyd Cole, who is serving as campaign chairman for the Moore District of the Occoneeche Boy Scouts, attended a training pro gram in Raleigh Thursday. Congratulations to Troop 98 of the West End Boy Scouts who won, the Health and Safety Aw^rd recently in the County! The program was present ed by Mrs. Richardson. The 15 members present enjoyed a social hour with the hostess. Mrs. W. M. Thompson was hostess to the Circle of the Jack- son Springs Church of which she is serving as chairman on Wed nesday evening. At the organiza tion meeting Mrs. W. A. Brown was made co-chairman and Mrs. Robert McKenzie elected secre tary-treasurer. Mrs. A. H. Mc Call was moderator of the Bible study and Mrs. Brown gave the program. The High School 'crowd had fun Monday evening at a birth day party honoring Sherrie Upole. There were games and dancing for all, novelty hats for guests and lots of gifts for Sher rie. The color scheme of red and white was used throughout the activity room of the Presbyterian Church. The serving table was covered with a white lace cloth over red, from which Miss Bert McCrummen presided at the punch bowl and Mrs. Floyd Upole sered decorated cakes and nuts. Also assisting with the fun were Mr. and Mrs. Larry Upole and Mrs. Shirley Craven. Leland Richardson, senior at the Union Theological Seminary, will supply the pulpit of the Presbyterian Church at Charlotte Court House, Va., this Sunday. The Rev. R. R. Ramsey, pastor of the church, will be in Char lotte this weekend with his fam ily to attend the wedding of Catherine Ramsey at Belk Chap el, Queens College, Charlotte. Mrs. Charles Krywokulsky and Mrs. Edward Tucker with Carol of Chicago, Ill., are guests of the North Lewis family. Bob VonCanon is a patient at Duke Hospital. Visiting his sister, Mrs. Ernest Currie, is Raymond Seawell of Norfolk, Va. Hospitalized at Moore Memori al is Brenda McKenzie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert McKen zie. George McDonald is a patient at Moore Memorial Hospital. Miss Louise Baughn left Sun day for Campbell College. Donald Madigan has been appointed news director of radio station WEEB, according to an announcement this week by Jack Younts, station manager. He suc ceeds Charlie Clapp who will join WSJS in Winston-Salem. Col. Madigan, who has been as sociated with the Elks Lodge, will continue many of his duties there. He is secretary and active in other affairs of the lodge. He retired from the Army in 1946 becauss of injuries received in the Pacific Theatre. Chapman of Pine- hurst and his son, Dixie, were among several outstanding golf ers recognized Tuesday night by the Metropolitan Golf Writers at their annual dinner in New York. The Chapmans, father and son champions, received awards. Others well known in this area who were honored were Tom Robbins, of Larchmont, N. y., and Pinehurst, national seniors champion, and Charles Coe, the national amateur champion. Coe, who won the National Amateur title for the second time in 1958, received the Metropoli tan Golf Writers Association’s Gold Tee Award, which goes to the person who has done the most for golf in the past year. The Chapmans, who won the father-son tournament in Pine hurst, are well known on North ern courses, where they spend a considerable amount of time in the summer. Chapm.an, Sr., won the North- South Amateur Jast year on Pinehurst’s No. 2 course.
