Lays Final Plans For Organization A major step in the organiza- jhelp, let us know and we’ll find THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina V/A gciliiz,a“ ■9 tion of the four-county Sandhills Area Development association was taken at a luncheon meeting here Friday of the planning com mittee, composed of representa tives from Lee, Moore, Richmond and Montgomery counties. Paul C. Butler of Southern Pines, chairman, presided over the meeting, at the Howard Johnson’s Restaurant at which # the new association was named and the next step outlined. His will be the selection of six-member boards of directors for each county, who will com bine to form the associational board of directors. The board will meet as soon as selected, adopt a constitution and by-laws and a kickoff dinner will be held at some place they designate H within the area. All interested persons, at least 50 from each county, are expected to attend and hear the associational plan outlined and its objectives set. In each county’s organization there will be also four represen tatives for each of the project di visions by which the association will accomplish its purpose of better income, better living ^ standards and improved oppor tunities for youth. These divisions —industrial development, agri cultural development, communi ty and travel and recreation— will also be represented by chair men and vice-chairmen in the as sociational set-up. J. W. (trawford, program plan ning specialist with the State College Extension Service, assist ed in the planning with details Vof the way other such associa tions throughout the State have got started on their way, in the county-cooperative effort, which in some cases has worked out with much success. John E. Johnson of the staff of the State Department and Con servation and Development of fered his department’s help, also, he told the group, “if you have ^•ideas or want to start projects in tourism or industry, or agricul ture-industry combinations, and don’t, know whom to contact for the right person or persons for you.” He congratulated the group on their big step forward in which he saw a potential of great progress. Ives has been named president of the Pinebluff Lions Club for a term extending to rJune 30 of next year. His election, and that of other officers, was made at the last meeting of the club. The other officers are James Earl Collins, first vice president; W. V. Smith, second vice presi dent; Brady Brooks, secretary treasurer; Thomas Kittredge, Lion Tamer; Theo Berg,' tail twister; L. B. Monroe, Jr., and Roy Wallace, two year directors; Brady Brooks and Thomas Kitt redge, one year directors; S. W. Honour, two year trustee; and Theo, Berg, one year trustee. The Agriculture Department’s crop reporting bpard has estimat ed that 1959 peach production in nine leading Southern states will total more than 14 million bush els. The figure is about one-tenth lower than the crop of 15,748,000 bushels last year, but still the second largest crop for the area in more than 10 years. As of May 1, the estimate for North Carolina was 1,200,000 bushels. For other states, the breakdown was this: South Caro lina, 5,000,000 bushels; Georgia, 3,400,000 bushels; Alabama,, 1,040,- 000 bushels; Mississippi, 420,000 bushels; Arkansas, 1,850,000 bush els; Louisiana, 12,000 bushels; Oklahoma, 170,000 bushels; and Texas, 850,000 bushels. Some growers in Moore Coun ty have been optimistic about the crop this year, predicting it will be one of the best in history. Weather conditions have hurt some but not extensively. Tennis Team Loses To Presbyterian Jr. College, 7-0 Southern Pines High School tennis players lost their fourth match of the year last Friday, losing to Presbyterian Junior 'College 7-0. The matches were played on the college courts at Maxton. Dick Clark, playing No. 1 for the college, defeated Dick Thom- asson of the high school 5-7, 6-2 6-1. Speed was blamed for more than 40 per cent of the traffic deaths and injuries in the U. S. during 1958.
