Al Hearing
A number of Moore County
people attended the public hear
ing on Teusday before the House
and Senate Finance Committees
on the Firemen’s Pension Fund
Bills. Those from Moore whom
We saw at the hearing included

jof Carthage; Elmer Renegar, L.
S. Rowell and Stanley Dunn of
Southern Pines; J. D. McLean,
Hugh Styers and A. J. Smith of
Aberdeen; Frank McCaskill and
George Veno of Pinehurst. There
is considerable interest in the
proposed Firemen’s Pension Bill
which would provide pensions
for firemen with 30 years of ser
vice and at least 55 years of age.
' » Scott Portrait
On Thursday night of last
week the portrait of the late U.
S; Senator and; former Governor
W. Kerr Scott was presented to
tlje State at a. ^int meeting of
the House and Seriate. The pre
sentation address was made by
Terry Sanford of Fayetteville
and Governor Sodges accepted
the portrait in behalf of the
State. Mrs. Kerr Scott and sons
Osborne and Robert W., and a
daughter, Mrs. Alfred J. Lowder-
milk, Jr., were on hand for the
presentation. The house chamber,
lobbies and gallery were filled
for the occasion. While I am no
judge of painting, I did not think
the portrait did justice to the
Squire of Haw River.
Farrells
Visitors in Raleigh on Tuesday
of this week were Judge and
Mrs. J. G. Farrell of Aberdeen.
Welfare
I have had a number of com
munications from Moore County
requesting increased appropria
tions for the Welfare Department
that more funds may be available'
for hospital care of indigent pa
tients. I feel sure that more
money will be appropriated for
this purpose than was recom-
mfended by the Govjernor and the
Advisory Budget Corrimission.
Senator Wilbur Currie of Moore
has taken the lead in the move
for more appropriations for this
purpose.
Poultry Laboratory
‘On Monday night I introduced
a bill to provide funds for a poul-

Saunders
I was mighty proud Tuesday
night when our own W. P. Saun
ders of Moore County received
every vote cast for University
Trustee.. There were 50 candi
dates for the 27 places to be fill
ed. There are 62 members of the
House nad Senate Trustee Com
mittees. One member was absent
(and he was for Saunders) so
Saunders got every vote cast,
something I don’t recall having
happened before since I started
serving in the House.
Moore Memorial Hospital.
