'The referendum will be limit
ed to those growers who have
one acre or more of orchard.
The assessment will be based
on one and one-half cents per
bearing tree. For purposes of the
referendum a bearing tree is des
cribed as one three years old or
older.
The referendum, called by the
North Carolina Mutual Peach
Growers’ Society, is expected to
pass easily enough, as it was dis
cussed and received wide support
at a meeting of the organization
several months ago in Pinehurst.
The present assessment is one
cent per tree. Almost $5,000 will
be raised for promotion if the
referendum passes.

Our natural advantages of climate are probably the
greatest single asset to better living in North Caro
lina. Both our summer resorts and winter resorts
are world famous. Retirement-age people are com
ing into the State from elsewhere. In years to come,
this group will grow and grow if our hospitality
matches our natural advantages.
Enlightened communities like Tryon, Pinehurst and
our coastal towns recognize that “legal control” of
the sale of beer and ale is the reasonable solution in
the interests of better living for which these areas are
especially endowed.
