Fire Fighters Of
County Heard At
Budget Session
J. A. Pippin of Rockingham,
district forester, and Travis Wick
er, Moore County forest warden,
made their annual appearance
before the Moore Board of Coun
ty Commissioners last week seek
ing funds for the next fiscal year.
The total amount requested of
the county was $9,458.40, a figure
which Mr. Pippin said was ex
tremely low when compared to
the amount of work and protec
tion it provided.
The State, he said, would ap
propriate as its share of the bud
get of $23,646, a total of $14,-
187.60.
The commissioners will prob
ably go along with the budget,
observers felt. Not in anyone’s
memory have they turned down
the fire requests Which, unlike
others, generally remain about
the same from year to year.
■The funds would have pro
visions for $10,469 for salaries of
the ranger, smokechaser and
field mechanic. Other funds will
be used for wages of tower op
erators, tractor operators, smoke-
chasers, equipment, and main-

civic pride I*
i ^
* -
Modern residential sections, new schools, hospitals, churches
and parks — this proof of a • dynamic civic pride is evident
throughout the 30,000 square miles served by Carolina Power
& Light Company.
Many sections of the nation could meet the physical require
ments of electronics, metals and chemical concerns that recently
located in the Carolinas. Certainly, like our long-time neighbors
in textiles, tobacco and furniture, these newcomers welcomed
the area’s new favorable tax structure and expanding consumer
markets. But they found one distinct difference in the Carolinas.
The difference is Civic Pride. It can be seen in over 3,000 com
munity projects completed in the 200 cities and towns that have
participated in the Finer Carolina Program — an annual civic
improvement competition sponsored by CP&L. Working to
gether, the people of these communities have helped develop in
dustrial maturity in the Carolinas.
