ReprerentaliTe — Telephone Vaae 2171 Baccalaureate Service “Dare to be a Daniel, dare to stand alone, dare to have a pur pose firm! Dare to make it known!” was the challenge hurl ed at the 16 members of the Vass-Lakeview High School graduating class at the baccalau reate service held Sunday eve ning in the school auditorium with a large gathering present. The speaker, the Rev. Wallace L. Smarr of the First Baptist Church, took as his subject “The World You Will Have To Face,” and his message, delivered with a marked degree of earnestness, drew much favorable comment. Mrs. Kate Mclnnis was pianist for the service, which opened with Zellner’s “Meditation at Evening” as a prelude. The Senior Class, led by Mascots Ann Boggs and Jimmy Mullinix, marched in to the strains of Mendelssohn’s “War March of the Priest.” The high school cho rus sang “Gloria Patri,” which was followed by an invocation by the Rev. Fant Steele and two more numbers by the chorus, “Jacob’s Ladder” and “Thanks Be to God.” Six girls and six boys of the chorus sang “Oh Mas ter, Let Me Walk With Thee.” Mrs. W. E. Gladstone directed. Supt. John McCrummen wel comed the assemblage, announc ed additional events of the com mencement season, and intro duced the speaker. The Rev. Mr. Steele gave the benediction, fol lowed by a prayer response by the chorus and the recessional. Serving as marshals were sev en juniors, chosen on a scholar ship basis. They are: Vera Mcln nis, chief; Ann Edwards, Jo Ann Brewer, Judy Cameron, Tommie Jessup, Dana ’Thomas and Joyce Doss. FHA Installation With the entire school in at tendance, Vass-Lakeview Future Homemakers of America, whos-s adviser is Mrs. Sadie Maurer, held an impressive and beautiful installation service in the school auditorium on Wednesday of last Week. Officers, outgoing and incom ing, were dress-ed in white; other members wore white blouses, most of them with red skirts, and each wore the FHA flower, a red rose. President Doreene Keith presided. • Judy McNeill led devotions and Bonnie Callahan arid Dana Thomas sang “Bless ’This House.” Each outgoing officer stated one of the purposes of the organiza tion, lighting a candle to repre sent same. The following were installed: Vera Mclnnis, presi dent; Judy McNeill, vice presi dent; Mary Lynn Oldham, sec retary; Catherine Simpson, treas urer; Barbara Thomas, reporter; Ha Marie King, parliamentarian; Sophia Oldham, historian; Joyce Doss, song leader; and Judy Cameron, pianist. Outgoing officers were: Do reene Keith, president; Vera Mc lnnis, vice-president; Judy Cam eron, treasurer; Sophia Oldham, secretary; Dana Thomas report er; Pauline Blue, parliamentari an; Ann Edwards, historian; Lin da Nicks, song leader; and Myr- na McRae, pianist. The FHA presented two flow er baskets to the school for use on the stage. Special Events I A number of special events have made the closing days of school happy ones for several of the classes. Miss Neolia McCrummen and her seventh grade pupils enjoyed a sight-seeing trip to Raleigh a few days ago, visiting a number of places of special interest. They went by chartered bus. Miss Gayle Dunn’s fifth grade held a wiener roast at the com munity house Thursday evening. Wieners and all the accompani ments were enjoyed, followed by games and dancing. Mrs. 'P. A. Wilson’s eighth grade held a party at ths com munity house, playing games, dancing to recorded music and which their son, Johnny, is en rolled, and Mrs. Kuzminski’s room, in which their daughter, Sandra, is a pupil, to ice cream and cookies on Tuesday. Family Get-Together Mr. and Mrs. John Clark and the latter’s brother, Luther Crouse, all of Greensboro, visit ed Mrs. Clark’s sisters, Mrs. A. L. Keith and Mrs. Cortis Thom as and their» families Sunday afternoon. The group then went to Ashley Heights to visit another sister, Mrs. Glenn Criss- man, and family. The Clarks at tended the baccalaureate sermon Sunday night, having a special interest, as Doreene Keith is graduating. Attend Graduation Mr. and Mrs. Russell Bullock and daughter, Marjorie Leslie, and Mr. and Mrs. Lane Bullock, and family attended graduation exercises of the Fuquay Springs High School last Thursday .eve ning. Jo Anna Painter, niece of the Bullocks, was one. of the 80- odd graduates. Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Painter, Jo Anna and Tony lived in Vass when the children were small. Mrs. Cameron Honored When Mrs. Charles Cameron left home with her husband and sons, Randy and Craig, on Wed nesday evening of last week, she thought they were goin^ to Pine- hurst to visit some fripnds. Her surprise was complete When the trip ended at Futnell’s lake where members of Methodist Circle 2 with their families were already assembled, and she was told that the supper party was in her honor. Mrs. Cameron is the retiring chairman of Circle 2, which she served in that capacity since its organization some two years ago. Presbyterian Men Presbyterian , Men of the Church met Wednesday evening of last week, with W. D. McGill presiding. Sgt. Julian Smith showed slides made during his tour of duty in Korea. Circle 1 provided the supper which was served by three of the members, Mrs. Hugh McLean, Mrs. Bob Edwards and Mrs. Bill Caddell. Baptist WMS Meets The Women’s Missionary Soci ety of the First Baptist Church met in* monthly session last Thursday evening with Mrs. Ray Griffin as hostess. Ten members answered roll call, and there were four invited guests, Mrs. Roy Wilson, Mrs. B. Ring and Mrs. Cox of the New Home Bap tist Church on Lobelia Road, and Mrs. Ernest Doss. “Hawaii, Our 50th State” was the program topic. As each per son arrived a flower was pinned in her hair and a lei placed around her neck. Mrs. Wallace Smarr presided and Mrs. F. L. Taylor led devo- tons. Mrs. Smarr, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. W. V. Nix and Mrs. Griffin presented the program, after which the hostess served ice cream, cake, salted nuts and Ha waiian punch. Personals 'Joe Edwards and Ralph Church, USN, came from Oce ana, Va., to spend the weekend in the home of Joe’s parents. Mayor and Mrs. A. G. Edwards, Jr. W. A. Muse accompanied his cousins, ROy Muse of Hamlet and Mrs. Jewell Hemphill lof Cameron to see Chandler Hill Mclver of Raleigh, who is a pa tient at Rex Hospital there, last Sunday. Mrs. Jack Morgan was called to Wadesboro Monday to see her mother, Mrs. Annie Shankle of Ansqnville, who became ill while on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. V. C. McGee. She had gone there to attend the graduation of her grandson from high school, but was unable to attend. C. R. Pope and son, “Scoot,” went to Goldsboro last Thursday to visit Mr. Pope’s parents imtil Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan McCran- ey and sons, Donald and Brew ster, of Picayune, Miss., were Friday night guests of Mr. Mc- Craney’s cousin, Mrs. D. H. Mc Gill, and Mr. McGill, and visited Mrs. W. D. McCraney Saturday. They went from here to Hamlet to see the A. M. Hemphills, plan ning to leave their car there and go by train to visit relatives in New York. Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson Baker and Mr. and Mrs. D. H. McGill went to Charlotte Saturday to attend a dance recital at the Elizabeth School auditorium in which Debbie McGill took part. Debbie was the only small girl to be presented in a solo number, and she was in two other dances. Mr. and Mrs. McGill were to re turn to Charlotte Wednesday to bring Debbie, their granddaugh ter, home with them for the summer. Cameron McLean of Norfolk, Va., and daughter, Mrs. Harris Evans, Charles and Janice Evans, of Wilmington, drove down from Ralegh and called on the N. N. McLeans Monday nght.
