The first really serious revolt
against the Russian throne in the
time of Catherine the Great when
the Cossack leader, Pugachev,
threatened her mighty rule, is the
tumultuous subject of “Tempest,”
Paramount’s Dino DeLaurentiis
production, which arrives Thurs
day and Friday at the Sunrise
Theatre. Heading the cast of
many thousands are stars Van
Heflin, Silvana Mangano, Viveca
Lindfors, Geoffrey Horne and co- |
stars Oscar Homolka, Helmut
Dantine, Agnes Moorehead, Rob
ert Keith and Vittorio Gassman. j
Filmed in Technirama and
Technicolor by the producer i
of “War and Peace,” the sensa
tional story of “Tempest” is told
in scenes of battle even more:
spectacular and sweeping than
the Tolstoy classic. Movie-goers
with a taste for dramatic action j
are due for thrills nevdr equalled |
as the mighty horsemen of the
Cossacks, the Tartars and the
death-defying Baschiri come to- i
gether in thunderous combat''
with the qwesome armies of
Mother Russia.
Against that turbulent back- j
ground is told the love story of
Masha, daughter of the com
mander, of remote Fort Bjelo-
gorsk, outpost of the Empire in
the frozen wastes of the steppes,
and Peter, an officer of the Royal
Guard who pits himself against
the rebel leader.
