Hiatt, Jr. and Mrs. Joel Stutts were program leaders for the monthly meeting of the Women’s Society of Chris tian Service, which was held in the Ladies’ Parlor at the Meth odist Church last Monday eve ning. The topic was “A New Am bassador for Christ—“The Tour ist.” Mrs. Ralph Franklin had a part in the discussion. Mrs. Murray Clark, president, presided and monthly reports from the various chairmen were heard. Mrs. B. A. Morgan was elected a delegate to the School of Missions being held at Duke University August 15-21. This was the final meeting of the year. A luncheon meeting will be held in September when the organization convenes again. The Cuffs, Former Local Residents, Are Now In Turkey CWO and Mrs. Harold J. Cuff and children, Dale, Dawn, Ann and John, who lived in Southern Pines while CWO Cuff was sta tioned at Fort Bragg and who left early this spring for his new as signment, are now living in Iz mir, Turkey, according to news reaching this paper. They have an apartment with marble fireplace, terrazo floors and three balconies, but this Old World splendor does not keep their minds from turning to life in Southern Pines. After 20 more months overseas, the y’ll be com ing back to the USA and CWO Cuff will retire shortly there after. The good news is that they’re planning to settle in Southern Pines, where th ey liv ed for about four years before go ing overseas. Local Delegates Attend B&PW Club Convention The state convention of the Business and Professional Wom ens Club was held at Woman’s College in Greensboro last week end, June 12-14, and was attend ed by Miss Margaret Thomasson of Southern Pines, president of the local club, and delegates Mrs. Nancye McClellan and Mrs. Charles E. Pleasants of Aber deen; Mrs. Woodrow McDonald and Mrs. Robert Leland of South ern Pines. The regular monthly meeting will be held next Thursday eve ning, June 25 at 7:30 at the Pine- bluff Methodist Church, with dinner preceding. Neals To Attend Reunion Sunday Horne’s Attend Lily Society Meeting Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Horne at tended a regional meeting of the American Hemerocallis (day lilies) Society in Timmonsvilla, S. C. last Saturday. Around 250 members from South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina at tended, the one-day meeting, which included a business ses sion in the morning, followed by a luncheon and garden tour of Timmonsville and Florence showplaces. Mr. Home, who is a local au thority on the growing of day lilies, has over 50 varieties at his home on East Delaware Avenue. There are, at present, around 30 or 40 varieties in bloom. Methodist Church Ends Vacation Bible School The Southern Pines Methodist Church completed ten days of Vacation Bible School last Fri day, with a picnic supper and program showing what the three departments had accomplished. A total of 96 was enrolled, with an average attendance of 83. Of these 46 had perfect attendance. In the Kindergarten department, with its theme “God and His World,” were the following teach ers and helpers: Mrs. Clyde Mor rison, Mrs. Kenneth Neese, Mrs. Harry Herendeen, Mrs. Vernon Maness, Mrs. John DeBerry, Mrs. Richard Johnson and Miss San dra Bridges. The Primary wiepartment had Mrs. Ralph Franklin, Mrs. Joseph S. Hiatt, Jr., Mrs. Ed Raper, Mrs. S. E. Thomas and Miss Margaret Hawks as teachers and its theme was “The Earth Is Full Of His Riches.” Mrs. J. H. Carter, Jr., Mrs. John Langford, Mrs. Frank Smith, Mrs. Murray Clark and Mrs. J. W. Porterfield had charge of the Juniors and their program was entitled “Praise Ye The Lord.” Church Of Wide Fellowship Notes A Commencement Service for the Vacation Church School is scheduled for Sunday morning June 21st at 9:45 in the Fellow ship Hay. All pupils, parents and friends are invited to attend. Miss Mary Stuart Harmon, pro fessor of Music at Mississippi Southern College, Hattiesburg, Miss., will begin Sunday as Sum mer Supply Director of Music and Organist. Father’s Day will be the theme of the 11 o’clock Worship Service Sunday, June 21st. Mrs. Neese Hostess Methodist Circle Mrs. Kenneth Neese was hos tess to Circle No. 3 of WSCS of the Methodist Church at her home on Crestview’ Road last Thursday evening. Two visitors, Mrs. Carl Aker and Mrs. George Poppendick attended with 15 members. Mrs. T. S. Craven, chairman, was in charge of the business session. Mrs. James Baldwin presented the program “June—Month of Commence ment.” A social hour followed at which gifts were exchanged and names of “secret pals” for the past year were revealed. A baby’s high chair was presented Mrs. W. L. Scarborough. Circle No. 1 met with Mrs. John DeBerry at her home on Rhode Island Avenue Tuesday morning, with the new chairman, Mrs. Lewis Telford conducting the meeting. Mrs. Fred Pollard had charge of the program. Dr. and Mrs. J. I. Neal will be in Raleigh Sunday to a;ttend the annual Thomas-Womble reunion. They will be joined there for the day by their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William Tackabery and children-of Rich mond. Neal and Patti will come home with their grandparents for a ten days’ visit with them at their home on Midland Road. Mrs. Neal has had her sister, Mrs. W. B. Cooper of Mayesville, S. C. with h^ several days this week. Mrs. Cooper is in Sanford with relatives now, but will be in Raleigh Sunday, also. Dr. and Mrs. At R. Griffith and daughter, Jane of Orangeburg, S. C. are coming up on Saturday for an overnight stay with the Neals, en route to Raleigh. THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 1959 Girl Scouts Make Honor Roll At Camp Gertrude Tufts Girl Scout troops of the county are taking turns at outings at Camp Gertrude Tufts near Pine- hurst, enjoying camping out, hik ing, swimming, craft work and cooking. The troops started their visits June 8 apd will have their innings—or outings as you like ■until July 17. Honor campers are chosen at each session, elected by vote of all the campers, and the honor roil to date shows these winners: First session, Janet Fullenwi- der and Katie Gilmore, Southern Pines, and Gwen Turner, San ford; second session, Martha Bul lock, Joyce Key and Susan Wom- ble, Sanford, and Dianne Davis, Siler City. The basis for the selection: do ing her job to the best of her ability; neatness; ability to lead as well as follow, and contribu tion to camp life. MISS GLORIA GILMORE AND MR. CLAPP SPEAK WEDDING VOWS IN NICHOLS, S. C. Mrs. Hussey Returns From Panama Mrs. Irene Hussey, former Sou thern Pines resident, has return ed after a seven month’s stay in Panama with her daughter, Mrs. Ray Schilling and her family. The Schillings, who are also for mer residents and well-known in the community, have a new baby daughter, Nancy Kay, who is now two months old. Their other children are Julie, Kibby and J^frey. Mrs. Hussey says she had a wonderful time in Panama sightseeing and being with her family. She returned by Orlando, Fla. and spent two weeks with another daughter, Mrs. Robert F. Hern, who has two children, Debbie and Robbie. Women Of The Church Hear Interesting Talks Mrs. Howard Butler, chairman of the General Fund Agencies, was in charge of the program of the Women of the Church at its regular monthly meeting at Brownson Memorial Church Mon day evening. Mrs. Frank Mc Neill of Aberdeen gave an in teresting talk on the Assembly’s Training School in Richmond, Va., which was heard by several young women of the community who are interested in the work. Mrs. Irene Nowell discussed the Historical Foundation which was very informative. Mrs. A. L. Burney, president, was in charge of the meeting. Mrs. William J. Graham conduct ed the devotionals, and Mrs. Wal ter Harper gave a report of the meeting she and Mrs. Burney at tended last Thursday in Char lotte. Clara Harper Entertains At Slumber Party Miss Clara Harper entertained a group of girls at a slumber party one night last week, at her home on Kensington Road. The girls had a “big night” with games, dancing, television—and plenty of food—and not much sleep! Her guests included the Misses Nancy Rowe, Suzanne Hill, Linda Smith, Sandy Wood- ell, Patsy Michaels, Becky and Gwen McKenzie, Jeanie Butler, Alice Shamburger, Loraine Beith and Nancy Wiggs. In a ceremony characterized by quiet dignity and' charm. Miss Gloria Harbort Gilmore of Nich ols. South Carolina, became the bride of Charles Graham Clapp of Wipston-Salem, in the Nich ols Methodist Church Saturday afternoon, June 13, at four o’clock. The Rev. W. Harvey Floyd, Jr., pastor of the bride, performed the single ring ceremony. A pro gram of wedding music was pre sented by Mrs. Pearsall Rogers of Mullins, South Carolina, organ ist. Mrs. Robert Candler Smith of Bennettsville, South Carolina, was her sister’s matron of honor. Miss Hazel Ayscue of Henderson, and Mrs. Betty Long of Southern Pines were bridesmaids. The at tendants wore short dresses of pale pink silk organza, fashioned with lace bodices, and carried nosegays of pink feathered car nations. Dr. Hubert Clapp of Swan- nanoa was his brother’s best man. Ushers were Howard Clapp, brother of the bridegroom, of Shelby, Shade Wooten of Char lotte, and Carlton Kennedy and Robert Dunn, both of Southern Pines. 'The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of silk mist, which featured a scoop neckline, long sleeves tapered into points over the wrists, fitted bodice, and full skirt that fell into a lovely court train. Her gown was appliqued with inserts of tulle, tiny seed peqrls, and Alencon lace. Her veil of sheer imported FVench il lusion was caught to a halo of orange blossoms. She carried a nosegay of white feathered car nations, tuberoses and English ivy'. Following the ceremony, the bride’s parents. Dr. and Mrs. Harold Shuler Gilmore, of Nich ols entertained at a reception in their home. During the early evening, the bride and bride groom left for their wedding trip, and upon their return will make their home in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Clapp attended St. Mary’s School in Raleigh and the Uni versity of South Carolina, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Until recently she was a member of the WEEB radio station in Southern Pines. Mr. Clapp, son of Mrs| Jesse Bliss Adams of Arden and the late Simpson Cornelius Clapp of Asheville, is a graduate of the University' of North Carolina. He is a member of the staff of WSJS Radio and Television in Winston- Salem. In and Out of Town-:- Aberdeen Club Holds Dinner Meeting The Aberdeen Junior Woman’s Club held its June meeting Tues day evening at the Jefferson Inn, entertaining their husbands for dinner. About 40 attended. Mental Health Group Meets Here Mrs. J. B. Spillman of Green ville, executive secretary of the North Carolina Mental Health Association, met with a group of 14 members at the Jefferson Inn last Saturday morning. The meet ing was followed by a luncheon. The Executive Board of'the as sociation met there on May 9 and another meeting is planned for some time in October. New Heir-Rivals Decostas Win At Duplicate Bridge Mr. and Mrs. Frank deCosta were winners at Tuesday eve ning’s Duplicate Bridge party at the Country Club. Mrs. J. J. Spring and Mrs. Jean Edson wefe second place winners, and Dr. L. M. Daniels and Dr. E. W. Bush were third. Mrs. Voit Gilmore and chil dren, Katie, Jerri, Susie and Peter left this morning from' the Raleigh airport for a trip to Cal ifornia. They will stop by Disney land before going, on to San Fran cisco to be with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kendricks. They plan to be away about six weeks, visiting with her family and taking trips to various places, including Lake Tahoe and Yos- emite. ELIZABETH CAROL JONES Mr. and Mrs. Donald D. Jones of Sanford announce the birth of a daughter, Elizabeth Carol, on June 2, at Lee County Hospital in Sanford. Elizabeth Carol has eight grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Poole, Mrs. Lenora Mul- holland and Mrs. Elizabeth Hew- ett, all of Southern Pines; Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Jones of Sanford and Mr. and Mrs. Jones of Flat Rock. She is the first great-great grandchild of Mrs. Hewitt. Mrs. Jones is the former Donna Poole of Southern Pines. Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell Rush and daughter, Kathy are leaving tomorrow for Winter Park, Fla. for a 't'isit with his brother-in- law and sister, Mr. and Mrs, E. F. Goucher. Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Hiatt, Jr. spent last weekend in Gastonia where she attended a reunion of her high school class. Later in the evening they were guests at the Debutante Ball at the Gastonia Country Club, when Mrs. Hiatt’s niece. Miss Ellen Rankin of Greensboro was presented. Mrs. Stanley D. Fobes went to Camp Vade Mecum last weekend to accompany her daughter, Ar den back home. Arden spent ten days at the camp as a counselor. They returned by Burlington for a brief visit with the Robert Cornwells and their family. Lamont Brown, jr. has returned to his home on East Indiana ave nue from Moore Memorial Hos- pitalf where he underwent sur gery about two weeks ago. He is getting along very nicely. Mrs. T. J. Garrett has returned home after several weeks’ visit with her son, T. J. Garrett, jr. and his family in Charlotte. Mrs. Garrett makes her home here Mrs. Harry Braha and sons, Cary and Gregg of Detroit arriv ed Tuesday for a visit with her aunt, Mrs. Graham Culbreth and Mr. Culbreth The Brahas were traveling north from Jackson ville, Fla., when he was called home on account of the sudden death of his father in Detroit. Mr. Braha will join his family here later. Mrs. Robert Stewart and daugh ter, Phyllis Ann King and Bobbie Ann Hall spent the weekend at Myrtle Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Jordan J. Frassi- neti and young son, Jeff of Greensboro were weekend guests of his mother, Mrs. Edward Gor- don-Mann and Mr. Gordon-Mann at their home in Knollwood. Mrs. James H. Ratliff, jr., who recently underwent surgery at Moore Memorial Hospital, is re turning to her home on Dogwood Lane Saturday. Her mother, Mrs. W. W. Seagle of Florence, S. C., is arriving the same day to be with her for a week. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Butler and son, Dan left Tuesday for Millboro, Va., where Dan has en rolled at Camp Kannata for six weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Butler will with her daughter, Mrs. R. E. [return home Friday. Looking Ahead LEARN MORE CLASS The Learn More Bible Class will hold its regular meeting Monday evening, June 22 at 8 o’clock at the home of Mrs. George Little On South Ridge Street. Rhodes and Mr. Rhodes on South Ridge extension. Mrs. Lula Cox Uzzell, of Tar pon Springs, Fla., and Durham, visited her nephew, W. E. Cox, Jr., and Mrs. Cox, last week. Mr. Cox returned Saturday from a four-day symposium at the Para psychology Laboratory, Duke Univ., where he was one of the principal speakers. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Morell left Tuesday morning for Peace Dale, R. I. where they will spend the summer months with her sister, Mrs. May Simmons. Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Hall and daughter, Bobbie Ann, Mrs. Fred Chappell and Mrs. William Baker were among guests Sunday in Raleigh at the wedding of Miss Jean Godwin to William Stewart. Jean is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Godwin, jr., former Southern Pines residents who re sided on Midland Road. Miss Pearl Pearson has return ed from a trip to Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Miss Lurline Willis has been spending several days this week in Greensboro and Winston-Sa lem. Mrs. Cheves Ligon was called to Lancaster the latter part of last week on account of the seri ous illnes of her father, J. O. Tay lor. Margaret Ann is with her mother, and. Frank is at home with his father. Dr. Ligon. Mrs. George Richardson has re turned from San Antonio, Texas, where she spent two weeks on a regular annual refresher course with the WACS. Ace Dawson has returned home after a visit with the George Pot tle family in Spring Lake, N. J. Miss Mary Logan left yester day for Asheville where she will be with her family for the sum mer. In and Out of Town Mrs. Walter Harper attended a luncheon in Sanford last Saturday, given by. Mrs. Edward Griffin and Mrs. Robert Pomeranz for Mrs. Jack James of Arlington, Va., who was' visiting her parents. Mrs. Pomeranz is the former An nie Louise Overton, a teacher in the Southern Pines Schools, and Mr. Pomeranz resided at South ern Pines Cottages several years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Alwin L. Folley and children, Jock and Dana are leaving Saturday for Pawley’s Is land for a two weeks’ stay. Mr Folley will be with his- family during' the weekends. They will have as their guests during this time Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mc Laughlin and young daughter, Marita, and Voit Gilmore. Alex McLeod is home this week from Duke Medical School and is with his mother. Dr. Vida McLeod at their home on Ridge Street. Dr. McLeod’s elder son, Robert and his wife and young son. Bob, Jr., of Charlotte were weekend guests. Mrs. J. P. Shamburger and daughters, Alice and Beth are spending two weeks in Wilming ton with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Trulove. Mr. Sham burger will join his family there for the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph L. Chand ler, Jr. and daughters, Judy, Rosie and Susie are at Garden City, S. C. this week at the Tarl- ton Cottage. The Chandlers, ac companied by Mrs. Chandler, sr., are going to Swannanoa Monday where Rosie will enter Camp Awaniko for a month’s stay. Mrs^ Rex Stoner left this week for Alabama for a visit with rel atives after spending ten days with her son-in-law and daugh ter, Mr. and Mrs. Nolley Jackson. Mrs. A. L. Burney and Mrs. Walter Harper were in Charlotte last Saturday to attend a Synodi cal Training School at Queen’s College.--*. Mrs. George Burns spent last weekend in Myrtle Beach with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John French and fam ily. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Massonburg of Raleigh, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Eastwood of Jacksonville and Mr, and Mrs. A. D. Eastwood of An derson, S. C., were guests several days last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Graham Culbreth. They attended the funeral in Carthage of their kinsman. Way- land H. Fry of Manteo. Mr. Fry died suddenly at the home of his brother, Charles Fry in Carthage, while on a visit to homefolks. The Rev. Robert L. Bame and Earl Hdbbard will be in Wilming ton next week to attend the an nual Methodist conference, which is being held June 22-26. Mr. Hubbard is the lay delegate elec- ted at the'' quarterly conference last September. W. A. Leonard is the alternate. Sam Richardson, who has been a patient at . Moore Memorial Hospital, has returned to his home on New Hampshire ave nue. He is much improved. His daughter, Mrs. John Leland of Charleston, arrived Tuesday for a week’s visit with him and Mrs. J Rithardson. Garland McPherson, II left last v/eek for Watertown, N. Y. for an indefinite visit with his great- aunt and uncle, Mr.'-and Mrs. W. D. Bennett. The Bennetts have a large dairy farm and Garland is looking forward to helping out ‘■'around the farm.” Mrs. C.
