Action Postponed By Commissioners
On More Funds For Water Line Here
Members of the Moore County
Development comnlittee, accom
panied by Southern Pines Mayor
Robert S. Ewing, former chair
man of the committee, asked the
county commissioners Tuesday
for $2,059 to, finish paying the
costs of piping water to the new
Trimble, Inc., plant.
The Town of Southern Pines
has already paid $16,000 to lay
the pipe to the city limits, and
the county has paid $7,500 to
carry it from there to the plant
site.
But it cost more than that, said
J. F. Steed of Robbins, who serv
ed as spokesman for the group.
Reasons the bill exceeded esti
mates: in anticipation of addi
tional industry and for develop
ment of that section, a 12-iijch
line instead of a six-inch line
was laid—and it v/as carried all
the way across the Trimble prop
erty. Also, fire insurance protec
tion required installation of a
hydrant at the property’s edge.
The Trimble company' paid for
the pipeline extension and a tap
for the plant and placed its own
hydrants near the building, it
was stated.
■While approving the changes in
principle, the commissioners said
no additional amount had been
budgeted, and they would have
to postpone action on the re
quest
The $275,000 Trimble plqnt is
ivearly completed on a site off
NC 2, just north of Southern
Pines. An October opening is
hoped for.
Tuesday’s delegation was cohi-
posed of Steed, Mayor Ewing.
Eutice Mills of Pinebluff, Billy
Johnson of West End, and June
Blue and Norris L. Hodgkins, Jr.,
of Southern Pines.
‘Letter-Writing
Week’ Scheduled
The 22nd annual Letter Writing
Week will be observed in South
ern Pines during the week of
October 4 to 10, says Postmaster
Max Rush.
Posters, depicting a mailman in
a new postal vehicle called the
mailster, will bej displayed in
post offices throughout the coun
try. Streamers, proclaiming that
“Letters are fun to send and ex
citing to receive,” will be dis
played on postal vehicles.
Postmaster Rush said that the
special Week will serve as a re
minder to write letters to service
men, hospitalized patients, fore
ign acquaintances, faraway friends
and relatives, and others who
will welcome a personal letter.
