The Rev. J. R. Funderburk Retires After 42 Years In The Ministry After 42 years in the ministry, the' Rev. John Robert Funder burk of Southern Pines has re tired. * Since his childhood in Char lotte, where he was born 66 years ago, the ministry has been his chief interest. H.e was not even discouraged when, 2ifter receiving , his first appointment—to Little Hope Church near Charlotte in 1917—he preached a carefully prepared sermon only to be greet ed by these words from an older member of the church after the service, “Son, you’re too young. We need an experienced man for this job.” Whatever he was at that low moment in his fortunes, Mr. Fun derburk is now without question an experienced man. For the past 22 years he has been a presiding elder in the AME Zion Church—first in the Fayetteville District and, since r.948, in the Cheraw-Bennetts- ville District of the Pee Dee Con ference. In the latter post, he supervised operation of 24 churches in a South Carolina area, and preach ed in one of the churches each Sunday. In the AME Zion Church, a presiding elder is a kind of sub-bishop who receives reports from the churches on fi nances, membership, the pastor’s work and other activities, co ordinates this information and makes reports to the bishop. Was Pastor Here During his 22 years as a pre siding elder, Mr. Funderburk made his home and his headquar ters in Southern Pines. Just prior to his becoming presiding elder, he had served as pastor of Trinity AME Zion Church here for two years, 1936-37. He liked the com munity and decided to stay here, even though his work in the Fay etteville and later Bennettsvilie Districts entailpd a lot of travel. His wife is the former Elnita Byers of Charlotte, a graduate of Scotia Seminary (now Barber- Scotia College) at Concord and a former school teacher in Meck lenburg County. The Funder burks have been married 46 years and have four grown children. Their youngest son, Walter, and his two older brothers, Robert and Harrell, are all graduates of West Southern Pines High School. Walter is also a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University at Charlotte and is now with the North Carolina Mutual Insurance Co. at Asheville. Their daughter, eldest of the children, is Mrs. Pauline Nixon, a graduate of Liv ingstone College at Salisbury. A former school teacher in North Carolina, she is now living at Pittsburgh, Pa., where she still teaches occasionally as a substi tute. Robert lives at Providence, R. I., and Harrell in New York Ctiy. The Funderburks have four grandchildren After attending the Charlotte public schools, Mr. Funderburk went to Biddle University (now Johnson C. Smith) in Charlotte, graduating in 1921. He had • al ready been conducting services in churches of the Charlotte area while he was in collegei—the “Son, you’re too young” incident being the most memorable event of this period of his training.' All his life, Mr. Funderburk sajls, he has been interested in Start A Fire Once A Year With A Ulnniii moRninG COAL HEATER • Famous Patonted “4-Flue Firabrick" Unioe Gets Extra Hiat tram Faal! • Holds Firi 24 Hours Ob Oni Filljof! • Boro Aay Kiod Of Coal, Coka or Briquets! • No CHokers...Mioiioiiai at Siieka! REV. MR. FUNDERBURK people—“the welfare of all the people.” He recalls how his moth er used to gather in the children of the neighborhood and conduct a Sunday School and collect clothing for needy families or at the time of some emergency. From her, he says, he got his in terest in people. “To help people” was Mr. Fun derburk’s quick answer when he was asked recently what had been the guiding principle or philosophy of his life. It appears now that this prin ciple will keep him busy and happy in his retirement. He plans to take part in, a program of con ducting vesper services for Mor rison Training School boys in the new division of the school at Mc Cain—a project of the inter-racial Moore County Ministreial Asso ciation- of which he was presi dent in 1956. He is interested, too, in a new project with which he has been asked to help—an organization that will give aid and guidance to unwed mothers. Civic Interests He expects, of course, to main tain his interest in local civic af fairs. He was president of the West Southern Pines Civic Club in 1955 when the club’s interest in town government was largely responsible for the election of the first Negro member of the Southern Pines town council and the appointment of a Negro mem ber on nearly every advisory committee or commission that works with the council on various aspects of community life. Several years ago, for a period of two years, Mr. Funderburk was State chairman of the Life Member Committee of the Na tional Association for the Ad vancement of Colored People and he maintains membership in the Association. Since 1937 he has been a 33rd Degree Mason and is proud of a large gold ring that was presented to him' when he was given this honor at Dallas, Texas, where he went to receive it. He is a member of Eureka Lodge No. 3 (Blue Lodge) at Fay etteville and has been a Mason since 1916. He is a member of the board of directors of the Moore County Tuberculosis Association and served as chairman of the Negro Division of the annual Christmas Seal Sale for several years. Boyette told the court that the woman had been taken to But- ner hospital soon after the slay ing, and that the latest report from there concerning her was that she was “hopelessly insane.” The girl trained a rifle on the back of her father’s head as he sat down to eat, killed him with one shot, then hitch-hiked to Aberdeen to give herself up, say ing, “He was mean to me.” She apparently had been held prac tically a prisoner by her father during most of her life in their isolated home.
