Bender were hostesses at a lovely tea on Thursday, April 7, honoring the former Miss Ann Poindexter (now Mrs. Edward Town Taws, Jr.) at the home of Mrs. Bender. The honoree was presented a corsage of white orchids from her hostesses. Upon arrival, guests were greeted by Mrs. Bender. Mrs. Lockey introduced guests to the receiving line composed of Miss Poindexter; her mother, Mrs. T. G. Poindexter; Mrs. Olive iJoug- las, aunt of the bride; Mrs. Ed ward Town Taws, Sr., mother of the groom; and Mrs. Frederic Claghorn, Mr. Taws’ sister. Throughout the Bender home, artistic arrangements of spring flowers enhanced the beauty of the entertainment area and through picture windctws, further spring blossoms were visible in the Bender gardens. In the dining room, Mrs. George Martin and Mrs. Lee Buchan in vited guests to a beautifully ap pointed table where Mrs. Jack Taylor and Mrs. Margaret Bowen poured lime ice punch. Bridal cake squares, mints and toasted almonds further accented the green and white motif. Mrs. R. S. Gwyn assisted in the dining room. In the family room, Mrs. F. B. Bishop and Mrs. C. E. Pleasants received. Others assisting in serv ing were Mrs. Earl Freeman, Mrs. S. A. Worsley, Miss Betty Bishop, Miss Sally , Poindexter, Miss Courtney Bowen, and Miss Rebec ca Bowen. WfSCS Meeting The April meeting of the Wo mans Society for Christian Ser vice of Page Memorial Methodist Church met with 20 members in attendance. Mrs. F. A. Cummings was tem porary chairman in the abence of the president. A study course on Townand Country was announced for th^ third week of May by the secretary of Missionary Educa tion, Mrs. J. V. Rowe. Mrs. W. U. Barefield was pro gram chairman for the meeting and she, along with Mrs. H. W. Doub gave reports of the high lights of the Annual Conference of the Methodist Women of N. C. held recently in Wilmington. The devotion consisted of a meditation given by a missionary at the an nual conference. i Attends Conference Aberdeen is always proud of its sons and daughters who are out standing in their business or pro fession and when glad tidings of their accomplishments reach homeward. Dr. John D. McLeod, Jr., minis ter of the First Presbyterian Church, Keyser, W. Va., had the honor recently of being one of four ministers chosn from the Presbyterian Church, U. S. (Sou thern) as representative to the Conference on World Affairs sponsored by the United Nations and held in New York City the last of March. Dr. McLod is the son of Mrs. John D. McLeod of Aberdeen. He has ably filled the pulpits of Be- thesda Church and Old Bethesda Church upon occasion when he and his wife and children have vacationed here. Educational Building Bethesda Presbyterian church made full use of its newly conj- pleted educational building oh Easter Sunday morning for the church school hour. On the Wed nesday evening previously, the new fellowship hall had been used for a family night supper and joint meeting of the Men and Women of the Church to hear Mr. Charles Pitts in an inspiring mes sage. The new building consists of five spacious classrooms, the fel lowship hall, kitchen, and rest rooms. The new classrooms are occupied by the Men’s Bible Class, the Women’s Bible Class, a nur sery class, kindergarten, and pri mary classes. The Jesse Wimber- ley Bible Class is making use of the fellowship hall for the church school hour. It was great cause for joy and thanksgiving as a record attendance entered tl>e portals last Sunday. Of special interest in the Men’s Bible Class is a beautiful lectern designed and built by Mr. D. J. McLeod, a member of the class, under the auspices of the class. It was presented to the class in hon or of J. Talbot Johnson, President of the Men’s Bible Class for a number of years. A bronze plaque in front ofth e lectern reads; “Pre sented in Honor of J. Talbot John- son. Ruling Elder and Class Presi dent by the Bethesda Men’s Bible Class of I960.’’ This was presented at, the close of the Church School hour two Sundays ago as a com plete surprise to Mr. Johnson. Easter Egg Hunt The Aberden Youth Fellow ship, composed of youth groups of the churches of Aberdeen, sponsored an Easter egg hunt for the pre-school children Monday afternoon on the lawn of the First Baptist Church. What a joy it was for the youngsters who surveyed THURSDAY, APRIL 21,1960 the lawn for the colorful eggs. A golden egg, the last one hid den, and with a special prize at tached for the finder, was found by four-year-old Franke McNeill. Following the “hunt,” the group was invited into the fellowship hall of the church for lemonade. Briefs Mr. ^nd Mrs. Wescott Burlin game and son, Westy, of Roches ter, N. Y.; and Mr. and Mrs. Rob ert Allport and children, Ann and Tom, of Franklin, Va. have re turned to their homes following Easter vacation with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Talbot Johnson. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Coble and daughter Myra of North Augusta, S. C. spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Mc Lean. Mrs. Coble and Myra re mained for a week’s visit here. Mr. and Mrs. Matt Toia of Sil ver Spring, Md. were weekend guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Harrington, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. David Bailey of Pittsburgh, Pa. visited her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Clifton Blue here and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Bailey in Southern Pines. Visiting Mrs. Jesse O. Winber- ley and family here for Easter were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wimb- erley and son of Richmond, Va. and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Chandler of Charleston, S. C. Mrs. J. D. Wimb- erley, who has spent some time in Richmond with her son and family returned to Aberdeen with them and went from here tp Charleston with the Chandlers. Attending the meeting of the Women of the Church at Brown- son Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines Monday night, where Mrs. P. P. McCain was guest speaker, were Mrs. John D. McLeod, Miss Martha McLeod, Mrs. Ann Mischke and Karen, Mrs. J. Talbot Johnson, Miss Blanche Capelle, and Mrs. Frank McNeill from Aberdeen. The front cover of this year’s color map shows a yiew of west ern North Carolina, near Mount Mitchell, and the back cover fea tures a coastal scene showing a fi.sherman with his nets and two small children looking on. The phrase “'Variety Vacationland” appears on both covers in red and black lettering, ’Three hundred thousand copies are ready for free distribution by the State High way Department. l^e map side shows Interstate routes in green, US routes in red and NC numbered routes in black I against a white backgrounel. Two new insert city maps have been I added this year. They are High Point and Rocky Mount.
