To Kiwanis At
Pinehurst Meeting
Warren T. White, assistant vice-
president of the Seaboard Air
Line Railroad, will speak to the
Sandhills Kiwanis Club at the
ciub's luncheon meeting Wednes
day of next week. The club will
meet in the Crystal Room of the
Carolina Hotel at Pinehurst.
Mr. White, who has been assist
ant vice-president of the Sea
board since 1950, has long been
a friend of the Sandhills and is
widely known here. J. Talbot
Johnson will be in charge of the
program.
A graduate of Clemson College
with the Bachelor of Science De
gree, Mr. White served two years
as an infantry officer in the
United States Aripy during World
War I. He has been associated

road for 35 years. In his capacity
as head of the Industrial Depart
ment of the Seaboard, he has been
lesponsible for the location of
scores of industries in the South,
bringing many millions of dollars
in annual payrolls to the com-
iiiunities in which these new en-
terprizes were established.
Under his direction the rail
road pioneered in the develop
ment of pulp and paper industries
111 the Southeast. He is an enthu
siastic worker in behalf of sound
conservation measures and he has
made notable contribution toward
the ' advancement of forestry in
lire Southeast. Mr. White organ
ized a division ol forestry in Sea
board’s Industrial Department in
1936.
In May, 1937, Mr. White was
awarded a Scroll of Honor by
Clemson College for having ren
dered distinguished service to the
industry and agriculture of his
native state—South Carolina.
Mr. White is the author ol
numerous articles which have ap
peared in magazines and trade
journals of national circulation.
He has spoken to various civic
clubs, commercial groups and
other organizations throughout
the South, as well as in the North.

AT FAIR—Miss Ann Herring of Winston-Salem, “Miss
North Carolina” of 1960, left, visited the commercial display
of the United Telephone Company of the Carolinas, Inc., while
she was at the Moore County Fair in Carthage last week. Rob
ert C. Bishop, commercial supervisor for the company, is demon
strating a pushbutton telephone for Miss Herring. Miss North
Carolina helped to judge the “Miss Moore County High School”
. beauty contest at the fair last Wednesday night in which the
winner was a Southern Pines girl , Patsy McRee. Louise Chap-
bell of Carthage was first runner-up, and Mary Lynn Odum of
Vass second runner-up. Rosie Chandler was the other entry
from Southern Pines High School. The winner and runners-up
were presented prizes by the Carthage Jaycees, sponsors of the
week-long fair which featured agricultural exhibits and other
