THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1960 PINEHURST NEWS by Mary Erelyn de Nissoff Lions Entertain Twenty-eight members of the Little League basebaU team were guests of the Pinehurst Lions Club at supper in the fellowship hall of the Community Church last Wednesday night. After the supper, a film on baseball was ♦ shown. League Formed The initial meeting of the Lea gue of Tarcisians was held, with eight members present, Sunday afternoon at Maryhurst Retreat House. Officers wiU be elected at the next monthly meeting. The League has three main aims for its members, who work to earn “three golden pennies” first, through prayers; second, through little sacrifices, and third, through obedience in the home and at school. Those attending the first meet ing were Audrey, Kathy and Pat rick Owens, James Schmelzer, Sherrill Thompson, Jeffrey Stew art, Kevin Gacomo and Tommy Thompson. Eileen Gacomo was unable to be present. Birthday Party Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gameau were guests at a dinner given Sat urday evening by Carolina Hotel guest Woody Browning. The oc casion was Mr. Garneau’s birth day. The group was joined later o plans a trip to Englewood, N. J. ftom there and will return to Bar berry Cottage the end. of next week. Mr., and Mrs. Whit Thomas and their five children, who have been with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Thomas since his release from the Afr Force and return from Savannah, Ga. a month ago, moved Tuesday into the Foster Kelly cottage on Dundee Road. Mr. Thomas is working with Whitesell Bros. Here for the weekend as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bradshaw and of her mother, Mrs. Jennie McKenzie, were the latter’s other daughter, Mrs. R. A. Hamor and her husband, of New Ellington, S. C., and their son and daughter Lt. R. M. Hamor and his wife, of Havelock, and Mrs. Claude M. Rhule,Jr., and husband, of Hills borough. The family had a dinner at the home Saturday evening honoring Mrs. McKenzie on her 87th birthday. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Karl Scheldt at Gateside Cottage is his sister, Mrs. Helen Scheldt Rambo, of Norristown, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Lyman expect to arrive tomorrow from their summer home in New Can- iheir summer home in New Canaan, Conn., to occupy Studio Cottage here for the season. Weekend guests of the Countess of Carrick at her Midland Road home were her cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Schlax, of Cincinnati, Ohio, who were en route to their winter home in Clearwater, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Alexander arrived here Monday, after week- ^ ending in Swannanoa, and will be occupying one of the Somerset Apartments on Everett Road for the season. Mr. and Mrs. Mac L. Baker, of Old Greenwich, Conn., who have been occupying the Oaks Apart ment last season, have bought Berkley Cottage on McCaskill Road, from Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Davenport. Mrs. William Tufts, who has W been visiting her daughter in Shaker Heights, Ohio, returned to her home here Saturday. and will be at the Carolina Cham bers until November 12. Back at their cottage here for the season are Mr. and Mrs. Lyle T. Alverson, who arrived Monday from New York City. Mr. and Mrs. Franz Woller, of Forest Hills, Long Island, have returned to their cottage, Vista Lodge, for the winter season. Mr. and Mrs. Winthrop Wil liams arrived Monday from Nan tucket. Mass, and are visiting his brother, Mr. and Mrs. Chester I. Williams, and the latter’s son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Williams, before leaving Sunday for their home in Palm Beach, Fla. Major Speed To Speak On Traffic Safety Problem Major Charles,A. Speed will be the speaker at the regular month ly meeting of the Pinehurst Par ent-Teacher Association, which, will be held Monday evening, No vember 7, at 8 p. m. in the Pine hurst School Auditorium. Because the 8th is Election Day, the meeting has been moved up to Monday instead of the originally scheduled Tuesday date. Dr. John J. Grier, Jr., chairman of the Health and Safety Commit tee, has arranged for the appear ance of Maj. Speed, a dynamic speaker, who is director of the Highway Safety Division, North Carolina Highway Patrol. “The Health and Safety Com mittee of the PTA,” said Dr. Grier, “realizing that the three top killers in the country are, first—heart disease; second—can cer and third—highway accidents, thought a discussion on highway safety by someone of his (Maj. Speed’s) calibre, with particular emphasis on how parents of young adults can influence young er drivers, was in order.” There will be a question and answer period following MajI Speed’s talk. Everyone in Moore County who is interested in the major problem of highway safety, is in vited to attend the meeting!
