Basketball Conference Competition Gets Underway; First Results Given By JOEL STUTTS The Mooro County Basketball Conference competition got un derway Thursday night of last week with West End and South ern Pines boys scoring impressive wins in their opening games. Cameron. Carthage and Pinehurst also won over their opponents. The West End team won over Vass-Lakeview by a score of 76 to 61 and the Southern Pines Blue Knights defeated the Aberdeen Red Devils 63 to 47. Outstanding boys in the county last week were: Carter and Smith of West End, Phillips of Cameron, Thompson of Vass-Lakeview, Phillips of Carthage, Whitaker of Farm Life, Marcum of Southern Pines, Fields of Aberdeen and Lewis of Pinehurst. In the girls’ division, impressive winners were: Aberdeen, Camer on and Elise High of Robbins. Outstanding players were Wil son of Highfalls, Garner of West End, Cameron of Pinehurst, Grov er of Southern Pin4s, Smith of Cameron, and Gatti and Caviness of Aberdeen. Elise High School of Robbins defeated Southern Pines boys and girls in games that were played at Robbins .Saturday night. The Blue Knights led in the game until late in the fourth quarter when Elise pulled ahead and won 45 to 34. The girls’ score was 54 to 36. DeRamus, Winston-Salem Regional Office manager, in re sponse to inquiries from individ uals and groups seeking verifica tion of verbal statements made by agents soliciting subscriptions land plus three coming in; Robert Five Foursomes Tie for Honors in Tin Whistles Play Saturday’s weekly tournament of the Tin Whistles Club, a best ball of all four partners event, drew 59 players to the links in Pinehurst. Pitting their collective skills against par, the rounds by the 14 foursomes and one three some produced a five-way tie for first place honors, with that num ber of teams finishing seven up on par. Four of the tied groups played on the Number Three course, the other made the round over Num ber One. The foursomes touring Number Three were: T. Howard Atkinson, Dennis C. Crotty, Gen. Hussey, Car thage, recently participated with other personnel from the 8th In fantry Division’s 504th Infantry in Exercise Jumping Jack in Ger many. The nine-day exercise featured a mass airborne assault on terri tory held by a simulated aggress or force. Over 2,500 paratroopers took part in the drop, which was designed to test the combat effi ciency of the participating units. Sergeant Hussey is a squad teader in the 504th’s Company- A in Mainz. He entered the Army in 1951 and arrived overseas on this tour of duty in December, 1958. The sergeant, whose wife, Shir ley, is with him'in Germany, is a graduate of Pinckney High School. Army Pvt. Howard T. Medlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard P. Medlin, Route 3, Carthage, recent ly was assigned to the 101st Air borne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky. Medlin, a radio operator in Company C of the division’s 327th Infantry, entered the Army in June, 1960, and completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S. C. The 19-year-old soldier was graduated from Vass-Lakeview High School in 1960. There were attempts to estab lish a lightship at Diamond Shoals as early as 1824, and except for brief intervals there has been a lightship at Diamond Shoals since 1897. A lightship, to mark Frying Pan Shoals was first anchored off Cape Fear in 1854.
