Vance Packard to Open Series of

A lecture by social critic Vanbe'*’
Packard will open the St. An
drews Presbyterian College con-
cert-lecture series for 1961-62 on
Monday, October 30, at 8 p. m.
in the Laurinburg National
Guard Armory.
A limited number of season
tickets for the series will be
available to the public on Mon
day, October 23, and thereafter
until the supply is exhausted.
They can be purchased between
8;30 a. m. and 4 p. m., in the col
lege business office, Room 122,
in the Liberal Arts and Science
Building.
Mr. Packard, author of “The
Hidden Persuaders,” a 1957 best
seller which was translated into
nine language's, pioneered in
alerting the American public to
the techniques employed for per
suasion in advertising. His book
“The Status Seekers,” also a best
seller, set forth his findings and
exploration of class behavior in
America and described present
trends.
In addition to Mr. Packard’s
lecture, the series will include;

A native of Rocky Mount, Mr.
Brewer attended Virginia Mili
tary Institute, graduated from the
University of North Carolina and
took a postgraduate course at
the Eastman Business School in
Poughkeepsie, N. Y. He is presi
dent of Brewer Paint & Wall
paper Company, with offices in
Greensboro and Rocky Mount and
is an elder in the First Presby
terian Church and active in
church and civic affairs in his
hometown.

Rt. 3, Carthage
James Wesley Hennings, 66, of
Carthage, Route 3, died Thursday
morning.
He was born in Yadkin Coun
ty.
Surviving are his wife, the for
mer Lula Hinesley; one son, Wel
don Hennings of Greensboro;
three daughters, Mrs. D. H. Wil
liams and Mrs. Billie Jessup,
both of Vass and Mrs. Leon Keith
of Vass Route 2; one brother.

Bend, Mrs. Emma Pilcher of
Route 2, East Bend, Mrs. Tinnie

phia, Pa., and 16 grandchildren.
A brief funeral service was
held at the home at 10 a. m. Sat
urday, conducted by the Rev.
William Hancock. Additional
services were held at 3 p. m. at
the Baltimore Methodist Church
r.-^ar East Bend, conducted by
the Rev. O. E. Merritt, assisted
bv the Rev. Fant Steele. Burial
followed in the church cemetery.

Octave Blake is here for a short
stay at his home. The Arches.
Mrs. Mulford Horr left Wed
nesday for New York City and
will fly from there to Berkeley,
Calif, to visit her daughter and
son-in-law, Mr.' and Mrs. Peter
Shattuck and her new grandson.
Mrs. Horr will then fly to Tucson,
Ariz. to visit another recently ar
rived grandson, and his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Morgan.
From there, she plans to go to
Tulsa, Okla. for a short stay with
her brother and sister-in-law, Mr.
and Mrs. Vincent Mulford, re
turning to Pinehurst November
8.
'Mrs. John E. Dixon is back at
her home on Village Green East
after spending the summer in
Blue Hill, Maine. En route home,
she stopped off for visits with
her son and his family in Boston
and with her daughter and son-
in-law in New York.

home Friday and is occupying
her home for the winter season

ing Europe. Since arriving in the
States September 20, she has
been visiting friends in Cam
bridge, Mass, and in Maine.
Mrs. John W. Watson and her
late husband’s brother, Richard
Watson, spent a couple of days
here, returning Wednesday to
Philadelphia, Pa.
Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Swaringen
spent a few days last week at
their cottage at Cherry Grove
Beach, S. C. after spending the
previous week in Edgewood, Md.
with their son, C. E. Swaringen,
Jr. and his family.
