CHARLES CAMERON Union Service The World Day of Prayer was observed Friday afternoon in a union service at the Vass Baptist church. Mrs. F. L. Taylor, WMS president, led the program with a congregational response. Pro gram talks were presented by Mrs.'Uavid Moe, Mrs. H. A. Borst, Mrs. Gene Hicks. Mrs. W. D. Mc Gill, and Mrs. J. D. Hales, Jr. Mrs. W E. Gladstone was pianist. Conduct Services Each evening last week, the ladies of tlie WMS of the Vass Baptist Church conducted services at the church in observance of the week of prayer for Home Mis sions. A special offering, known as the Annie Armstrong Offering, concluded the Friday night pro gram. Personals Mr. and Mrs. Bill Marshburn and sons, Paul and James, and Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Rayburn and son, Glenn, of Aiken, S. C., spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Frye. Butch Griffin, sophomore at Western Carolina Teachers Col lege, Cullowhee, arrived Friday to spend a semester break with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Griffin and family. Butch will re turn for classes on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Williams, en route from Florida to their home in Sherrill, N. Y., called on the Rev. and Mrs. David Moe and children this past weekend. Mrs. Daniel Boggs and Miss Agnes Boggs attended the funeral services for Mrs. Mamie Hunter of Durham at the Cameron Pres byterian Church Sunday after noon. Mrs. John J. Moe arrived here Saturday from Miami, Fla., for a visit with her son and daughter- in-law, the Rev. and Mrs. David Moe and children, Beverly and EdlL; Mrs. Mae, who resides in California, served in the mission fields in Southern China with her husband, the late John Moe. On Tuesday afternoon of last week, 16 Moore County foster home parents met in joint session with Moore County Welfare Agency staff to learn “how we can do an even better job for our children.” Mrs. Walter B. Cole, director Moore County Welfare r. partment, welcomed the guests and introduced them. Miss Annie H. Jones and Mrs. Sarah McCas- kill, child welfare worker of the agency, aided in making plans for the meeting. Moore County has 14 licensed boarding homes with 22 children being board.?d. Mrs. Woodrow McDougal and sentative, and Miss Betty Gibson, child welfare consultant, with the State Board of Public Wel fare, Raleigh, were present. Miss Gibson was the speaker. She expressed appreciation for the splendid work that is being ione by foster home parents, and the high regard in which they are ' •■'Id by our State Welfare De- lartment. The parents were en couraged to ask' questions cen tered around prohlems that had irisen or might arise in their homes. Several of the group •"'id.3 valuable contributions to this discussion, which was led by Mrs. Cole. A film, “Hard Brought Up,” was shown. This story showed -ome of the reasons children are brought into juvenile court and the Dart the judge, the officers, the doctor, the minister, and fos ter parent and the social worker play in helping children to be come better adjusted to society. Representatives from these or ganizations were present for the showing of the film: clerk of court who is the Judge of Juve nile Court, Sheriff’s Dept., Rob bins Police Dept., Carthage Po lice Dept, Moore County Educa tional Department, Berkley School. Pinckney School, Carth age High School. Moore County Health Dept, and Moore County Welfare Board. The following foster boarding home parents were present: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Davis, Mrs. Edna Person, Mrs. Lillie DeGraf- fenried, Mrs. Ora Kelly, Mr. and Mrs. Maria K. Jones, field repre- Mrs. Oma Blanchard, all of Car thage; Mrs. Howard J. Gschwind and Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Pre- vatte, all of Vass; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Armstrong of Cameron; and Mr. and Mrs. James Living ston of Southern Pines. Approximately fifty people at tended the meeting and showing of the film. JACKSON SPRINGS NEWS The World Day of Prayer was observed on Friday evening at the Presbyterian Church with Mrs. E. J. Blue, director Of Spirit ual Life, in charge of the service. She was assisted by Mrs. Kimes Blake who gave a devotional, and by Judy and Jennie Blue who sand “Sweet Hour of Prayer.” Mrs. Marvin Poole was hostess to Circle II of the Presbyterian Women at the covered dish sup per on Monday evening at her home. Mrs. John C. Blue gave the Bible study and Mrs Mike Lam beth had the program. Special guests of the Circle were Mrs. Lacy McDuffie and Miss Monnie Currie of Candor. Attending a hat-making work shop in Southern Pines on Friday night were Mrs. Charlie Mc Donald, Mrs. Marvin Poole, and Mrs. Ollie Currie. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Dickerson visited her mother, who is ill in a Georgia hospital, last weekend. Mrs. Bob Vickery, with Julie and Sarah, of Seneca, S. C., are guests of the Marvin Pooles. Mrs. Joel Stubbs had surgery last week at Moore Memorial Hospital, and Mrs. W. L. Stubbs is also hospitalized there. Mrs. D. M. Poore of Chandler and Mrs. Betty Chandler of Glen Alpine visited the Stubbses on Saturday. When the engagement of Miss Susan Currie of Jackson Springs and Elizabethtown was announc ed to Earl Barbour, Jr. of Candor last wek, they gave Mr. and Mrs. John Barringer of Carthage the credit of arranging thier first date. It was it the fall of 1960, and was an instant success, and the couple has been dating regu larly since that time.
