Hoiilcer, 30, soh of Mrs. Addie
Hooker, Route 1, Jackson Springs,
recently re-enlisted for six years
in the Regular Army while serv
ing with the 8th Infantry Divi
sion in Germany.
Specialist Hooker, an avionics
repairman in Headquarters Com
pany of the division’s 8th Signal
Battalion in Bad Kreuznach, en
tered the Army in 1948 and arriv
ed overseois on this tour of duty
in August, 1959. His wife, Myrtle,
is with him in Germany.
Army Staff Sergeant James R.
Hqlder. 25, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Charlie W. Holder, Star Route,
Carthage, recently was awarded
a rifle and pistol match medal
for his participation in the
Special Troops rifle and pistol
competition in Seoul, Korea.
Sergeant Holder, a platoon
leader in the Eighth U. S. Army
Honor Guard in Seoul, entered
the Army in 1955 and arrived
overseas on this tour of duty in
May 1961.
He attended Carthage High
School.
A record 42.3 million tons of
livestock and poultry feed was
manufactured in the United States
in 1961—seven per cent more than
in 1960.

Members of Southern Pines
Masonic Lodge No. 484 and
guests, numbering about 200,
gathered at the Vass-Lakeview
School Cafeteria Saturday night
for the sixty-sixth Anniversary
Banquet and Ladies Night of the
organization.
Spring flowers with yellow pre
dominating were used to decorate
the room, and these, with blue
dishes on the tables, created a
pleasing effect.
Lloyd L. Woolley, traditional
ly the choice as toastmaster for
these occasions, started the pro
gram with the singing of America
led by Past Master H. W. Ehr-
hardt, Jr. An invocation by the
Rev. Carl E. Wallace followed,
Next and at intervals throughout
the evening the Gospel Four
quartet, composed of Messrs.
Britt, Deaton, Matthews and Wil
liams, delighted the crowd with
special music
Mr. Woolley introduced the
guests and Norris I. Edge gave
the address of welcome to the
ladies, to which Worthy Matron
Mrs. Raywill Pearce of Magnolia
Chapter 26, Order of the Eastern
Star, responded.
Karl E. Schweinfurth introduc
ed the speaker. Dr. Thomas E.
Haggai, psistor of Emory Wood
Baptist Church in High Point. He
disclosed the speaker began
preaching in Boston at the age of
twelve and a half years, and cited
an impressive list of accomplish
ments. In addition to his church
duties. Dr. Haggai averages al
most 365 addresses a year to spe
cial groups, Mr. Schweinfurth re
vealed.
As Dr. Haggai spoke, it was
easy to see why he was in such
demand. Waves of laughter sipread
through the room as he told clev-

Circle Meets
The April meeting of Circle 2
of the Vass Methodist WBCS was
held Thursday night, in the
Church Fellowship Hall. Mrs.
Horace Mullinix, chairman, pre
sided and conducted a business
session prior to the program. In
the absence of Mrs. B. S. Futrell,
Jr., program leader, Mrs. Roby
Futrell was in charge of the pro
gram, “The Responsible Christian
Citizen.” Following the scripture
read by Mrs. Futrell, Mrs. Lewis
Frye, Mrs. Charles Cameron, and
Miss Carol Foster presented the
program in a television panel dis-
Icussion. Mrs. James Grissom was
hostess and served refreshments.
Sixth Birthday
Craig Cameron, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Cameron, celebra
ted his sixth birthday Saturday
afternoon with a party at his
home. Twenty-two young guests
joined him in playing games and
delighted with him in the open-
;ing of his gifts. Refreshments of
cup cakes, ice cream, and pink
lemonade wene served. The chil
dren received favors of blow out
horns. Adult guests present were
Mrs. Nicely and Mrs. Jesse Coore.

Hoffman and children of Sanford,
and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Court

Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Taylor of

week here with her mother, Mrs.
Mary Howell. •
Lewis George, Sr. who has been
a patient at St. Joseph’s Hospital,
was able to return home Monday
of this week.

they have named Samuel Morris,
Jr., at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Sat
urday, April 7.

Moore Memorial Hospital.
Peeting Postponed
The dinner meeting of the Vass 4
Woman’s Club to be held at Sam-
arcand Manor has been postponed
from the second Friday night un
til April 27. The change was made
to avoid a conflict with the an
nual Kiwanis-sponsored Picquet
Music Festival.

District Deputy Grand Master
E. Floyd Dunn presented a Past
Master’s emblem to Edwin L.
Finch and a Twenty-five Year
award to Jack Franklin Carter.
Mr. Woolley announced two
awards made recently: a Fifty
Year to Percival Earl Estes and
Twenty-five to Secrest W. Hefner,
Martin A. Wicker and William
Edgar Starnes. He also recognized
present Lodge officers and their
guests, living Past Masters in at
tendance, and two Past Masters
of other lodges: James E. Besley,
Roman 223, Rome, N. Y., and
Ira E. Browne, who organized
Verdun 46 in France.
He expressed thanks to the
Banquet Committee: Mr.
Schweinfurth, L. Rx:issell McRae
and Edwin L. Finch and all of the
lodge officers.
Gen. R. B. Hill spoke the bene
diction.
Dinner was served by girls of
the home economics department,
of which Mrs. Sadie Maurer is
head.
