Rules For Boating Safety Outlined; Advice Available If you’e one of the 40 million who’ll take to the water this year to enjoy boating, now is the time to brush up on the rules for safe boating. There are booklets and pam phlets available from such sources as the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Outboard Boating Club of America, and from manufact urers in boats and motors. If you’re a boatsman, get one of these booklets and study it. There are certain basic precau tions that all boaters should know and observe, but the cardinal rule is simple: Display good manners afloat. Show proper respect for others and, most often, you’ll get the same treatment in return. A second cardinal rule: Use a little common sense. It doesn’t take much knowledge of boating to know that a big lake on a windy day can be dangerous to a small craft. , , Here’s a good set ox rules: Don’t overload your craft. The more you put into the boat the easier it is to capsize. Melvin's SOUTHERN PINES Don’t stand up or change seats while the boat is under way. If you must move about, keep low in the center of the boat and hold on the gunwales. Buzzing a dock, wharf or an chored craft marks you as an irresponsible skipper. Don’t do it. You may miss. Watch your wake. The waves can damage shoreline property. Pass through anchorages at mini mum speed. Avoid boating too close to swimmers, fishermen and water skiers. It can be dangerous. Don’t jump or dive from a mov ing boat. You may hit floating debris, or an underwater object. Or you may have the breath knocked out of you by the impact. Never take a boat out unless it contains life jackets for everyone aboard and the life jackets are donned. Even a good swimmer can get into trouble if thrown abruptly from a fast moving boat into cold water. Never venture too far from shore on a large body of water in a small craft. Sudden squalls can play havoc with unwary boats- men. If your boat overturns, stay with it. The chances are good that, sooner or later, someone will pick you up. Very few of us are in good enough physical candition to hold up for a long swim, parti cularly in rough water. THURSDAY, JUNE 14, 1962 BIGGEST KILLER Excessive speed was the biggest killer on North Carolina high ways last year.
