& THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1962 THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina Page SEVENTEEN AT PINEBLUFF— Thirty-five Pinebluff area children are taking part this week in a swimming and water safety instruc tion program at Pinebluff Lake, sponsored by the Pinebluff Improvement Association. Mrs. Nancy Howe, instructor, is shown above at left giving individual pointers to one of the students and, at right, talking to some of the children taking the course. GIVEN SUSPENDED SENTENCE Eight Children in Car With Woman Carrying Load of Bootleg Whiskey When the name of Rosia Cam eron Nixon of Fayetteville was called in Moore County Recorders Court Monday and the defendant failed to answer, the officers who had arrested the woman on whiskey charges and let her go home without bond were under standably nervous. ABC Enforcement Officer C. A. McCallum and Trooper R. S. Wicker were relieved when the Negro woman showed up later, pleaded guilty and took her punishment. Stopping her car late Saturday night at Vass had thrust the of ficers into almost as great a pre dicament as the driver. In the car they found nine half-gallon jars of illicit whiskey—and also eight small children, ranging in age from nine years down to one week old, several of them on bot tles. Arresting the driver and con fiscating the car, they pondered what to do with all those young sters. Finding the mother had enough money to take a taxi home, with none left over for bond, they let her go, citing her to the court in Carthage Monday. Officer McCallum said they had had information on the woman, and that she habitually carried her children with her on her “whiskey trips.” While she gave a Fayetteville address, her driv er’s license carried the address Cameron, Route 2, Harnett coun ty. For possession for sale and transportation of illicit whiskey, she was handed a term of six months in Women’s Division of State Prison, suspended on pay ment of $100 fine (in instalments) and costs, not to violate the pro hibition laws during the next two years, her 1949 Ford to be advertisied and sold by the Sheriff according to the law.
