Hoover were state’s witnesses in cases in which only two of the boys were originally charged, Richard Windle Wilson, 17, for speeding in excess of 90 miles in a 55-mile zone, and Bobby Luck, 18, for assault on an officer in the performance of his duty.’ Both pleaded not guilty. On hearing the testimony of the officers, the defendants and the other two boys, James Vest and James Pack, Judge J. Vance Rowe caused the warrant in the Wilson case to be amended to include all four. He found Vest guilty on the high-speed charge, Wilson guilty of allowing another to drive his car at the 90-plus speed, and the other two of aiding and abetting, sentencing each to 90 days on the roads, suspended for 12 months on payment of a $100 fine for West and Wilson, $50 for Luck and Pack, plus costs. Luck, convicted of engaging in affray, drew an additional 30 days, suspended for 12 months on good-behavior conditions and payment of costs. Chief Blake said he tried to stop the boys’ car at Candor as they drove through town tossing peaches at cars, that they dodged around a block with their lights off and, circling the other way, he had been suddenly confronted with them and had to drive into a curb to avoid a head-on collis ion. As they fled out of sight, the chief, with his car damaged, radioed for State Highway Patrol aid. Trooper Hoover described the headlong chase along rural roads and into Highway 27 in Moore County, where the car skidded i 100 feet along a shoulder and I stopped, three of the boys jump ing out and running into the woods. The Pack boy remained in the car and Hoover said he caught Wilson, but the others emerged only when he called to tell them he had sent for the prison camp bloodhounds from Troy. Vest and Luck said Wilson had been driving, while Wilson told him Luck was driving, the troop er said. In court. Luck and Wilson changed their story, pinning it on they had not been able to tell who was the driver. All the boss admitted they had been drinking earlier in the evening. In the assault case. Chief Blake testified that Luck, who was wearing a cast on his arm, had flung up his arm, hitting him in the face with it, knocking him to his knees and breaking his glass es. Luck denied this, stating that he had flung up his arm to pro tect himself, and all three of the other boys corroborated him. However, Judge Rowe apparent ly disbelieved their testimony. The four were indicted also in Montgomery County and were due for trial there Tuesday.
