THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1962 THE PILOT—Southern Fines, North Carolina O MOORE COUNTY RECORDER'S COURT 2 Women Sent To Prison For Year For Shoplifting; Others Acquitted Two Negro women from Eagle Springs were sentenced to Wom en’s Division of Central Prison for 12 months on shoplifting charges, while two others from West Southern Pines were ac quitted on similar charges in Moore County Recorder’s Court at Carthage Saturday. While Deputy Sheriff J. A. Lawrence was the state’s witness in each, the two cases were sepa rate from each other and there was no indication the Eagle Springs and local knew each other. In the case against the Capel and Cooper women, Lawrence exhibited five or six large car tons of new wearing apparel, household linens, etc., which he said had been found in the Cap el woman’s car fey police when it was parked at Rockingham Wednesday, August 22. The two women, who had driv en to Rockingham after doing their morning’s “shopping” in Aberdeen stores, admitted to hav ing stolen the goods. Several store owners were able to identi fy their property, Lawrence said. Only the Belk’s and Collins man agers, however, took out war rants. Ordered into effect to run con currently with Tier prison sen tence was a sentence previously imposed on whiskey charges, and then suspended, for Helen Coop er. The women are reported to be under suspended sentence for shoplifting in Guilford county. The shoplifting at Aberdeen had been done so adeptly that personnel were not aware of their losses until he brought the mer chandise items bearing their stock and price tags, Lawrence said. Judge Rowe directed that all the merchandise identified by the owners as theirs be returned to the owners, and a number of items which could not be identi fied were to be turned over to the sheriff’s department, for dis tribution among the poor and needy. Southern Pines Defendants In the case against Annie Lou ise Fox, 40, and Margaret Eliza beth Farmer, 31, of West South ern Pines, the defendants pleaded not guilty and were vigorously defended by counsel. Judge Rowe acquitted them on the grounds of insufficient evidence. Lawrence in this case had as exhibit a brown plaid cotton teen-age-size skirt, with stock and price tags from Collins Store, Aberdeen, which he said he had found on the floor of the Fox woman’s car, which was driven by her husband with both women as passengers. The women had been in several Aberdeen stores, Collins among them, and Lawrence said he had observed them but had not seen them stealing. His attention had been called to the Fox woman by I Tew, Clyde and Ina, 1 L i Vann, Cornelia P., 2 L V. F. W., 18 L Ward, Mary Ethel, 4 L Bal Wilson, Raymond, Home Winecoff, Mrs. E A,. 6 L a store clerk who said she had been acting suspiciously. He showed several other new items, with price tags still on defendants them, which he said had been found in a search of the Fox woman’s home. However, both women had said they did not know how tha skirt came to be in the car, and the items found in her home, Annie Louise Fox ex plained by saying they had been given her by her sister, who had then gone “overseas.” Other cases disposed of Satur day: John Thomas Norris, Rob bins, driving while drunk, $100 and costs with license revoked for 12 months; Dal Butler. Rob bins, neglecting and refusing to .support his wife and children, not guilty. 33.10' Medlin, Howard, 1 L 21 66 39.89 Medlin, Howard, Jr., 1 L 35 21 20.27 “ Page THIRTEEN 41.98 42.40 6.62 71.09 Wright, Gerald L., 3 L McNEILL - Town, (Colored) Alford, James, 1 L : 17.97 Allen, Anna Hrs., 3 L 37.70 Armstrong, Alexander 1 - 21.71 Alston, Robert L., 1 L 8 94 Armstrong, Flora Hrs., 3 „ L Bal. 6.98 Barnes, Nora, 3 L 8 94 Bennett, Bobby Lee, 1 „ ^ Bal. 16.00 Bennett, John D and AnneUa ^ 1 L 15 75 Bethea.
