Mc- onnell came home last week end from Camp Lejeune, where he is taking advanced training as part of his six months’ tour of duty as an active reservist. After a 10-day leave he will return to Camp Lejeune for a month be fore separation. A student at the Ufliversity of North Carolina last year, he plahg to continue his studies. He is the son of Superior Court Judge John D. McConnell and the late Mrs. McConnell, ip Wi PVT. ORN R. VESTAL, 18 has been assigned to the U. S. Army Training Center, Infantry, at Fort Dix, N. J., for eight weeks of basic training, after which he will have two weeks’ leave before en tering advanced infantry or spe cialist training He is 18, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Orn David Vestal of 782 W. Pennsylvania Ave., and is a graduate of West Southern Pines High school. Army Specialist Four Clyde Thompson, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. George R. Thompson, Cam eron, recently received a safe driver award for driving 9,000 miles without an accident or traf fic violation, while assigned to the 56th Quartermaster Battalion in Germany. (Photo by Moore County News) ‘Hurricanes’ Now At Planetarium In Chapel Hill “Hurricanes,’ the first program of the Morehead Planetarium’s 1962-63 schedule, opened Satur day, September 1, and will be presented at 8:30 p.m. daily, on every Saturday at 11:00 a.m., 3:00 (Postponed to 5:00 p.m. on “Home Football” Saturdays) and 8:30 p. m.; and 3:00, 4:00 and 8:30 p.m, on Sundays, through October 8th. For a complete schedule for the coming year’s performances write: The Morehead Planetarium, Chapel Hill, N. C. In the “Hurricanes” show, new knowledge about hurricanes will be described and there will be a simulated hurricane within in the domed planetarium chamber. A special program, “Skies of the Year 2000,” which Cub Scouts are urged to attend, will be given at 2 p.m., September 8 and 9, in addition to the hurricane shows. Simpsons Leaving Aberdeen Horne’s Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Simpson who have been serving as man agers of Horne’s Restaurant and Candy Shoppe in Aberdeen will leave Friday for Scottsmoor, Fla., where they will serve as man agers of a similer Horne’s estab lishment. They came to Aberdeen from Florida v/here members of their family reside. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins, who have been assisting in the man agement of Horne’s, will assume the management duties when the Simpsons leave. William FauJk of Aberdeen has been named as sistant. 4.H Girl Tells How To Care For Pressure Canner BY DIANAH COCKMAN Elise 4-H Club, Robbins The pressure canner is one of the most important utensils used in canning. Therefore you should be very careful in the care of it. After each using the pressure canner should be thoroughly cleaned. Wash the kettle in hot, soapy water and dry thoroughly. Do not put the cover of the can ner in water as the dial gage and vents will be damaged. To clean (the lid, use a clean, damp cloth. Keep openings to the safety valve and petcock clean. Clean by drawing a narrow strip of cloth through them. If the safety valve is the ball and socket type, it should be cleaned after each use. A toothpick may be used in keeping the opening of the pres sure gage clean. Never put the pressure gage in water. Be careful not to add cold water to a hot canner or to put a hot canner in cold water. Caton of Southern Pir.°s, is a candidate for a half back position with the Cadets, first football team to be fielded by the Carolina Military Academy at Red Springs. A senior at the new school, he weighs 140 pounds. ’There are more than 700,000 ru ral boys in Scouting. Former Lakeview Man Succumbs In Florida News has been received here of the death of L. B. MacWilliams, 58, former Lakeview resident, in St. Petersburg, Fla. MacWilliams, a widely known salesman, died August 31 in his sleep at his home in St. Peters burg. Funeral services were con ducted Monday in Birmingham, Ala. For many years MacWilliams traveled as a farm equipment salesman for an Atlanta concern and was well known in the Cen tral Carolina area. He and his family made their home for sever al years at Lakeview, but moved to Florida two years ago. Surviving are his wife and a daughter, Miss Alease MacWil liams of the home, and a married daughter. or warp the pressure canner. The pressure canner will last much longer and you will have much better canned food, if you care for it properly.
