VASS NEWS & PERSONALS By Mrs. CHARLES CAMERON Mission Study Concluded A four-session study course, con ducted by the W. S. C. S of the Vass Methodist Church on “The Churches’ Mission to Persons of Special Need” was concluded with the third and fourth ses sions on Monday night of last week and Sunday night. Mrs. Horace Mullinix was in charge of session three on “Alco holism” Monday night and intro duced the guest speaker, the Rev. Martin Caldwell of the Episcopal Church in Southern Pines, who ispoke on ^‘The Rehabilitation of Alcoholics in Moore County.” A film in relation to the topic was shown and an informal question and answer period was held after which the Rev. Mr. Caldwell pas sed out enlightening and helpful literature on the subject. The final session was presented by Mrs. David Moe on Sunday night. In addition to the session on Theology, Mrs. Moe gave a review and summary of the pre vious sessions. Mrs. H. M. Kling- enschmidt read the scripture. Assisting with related topics were Mrs. A. G. Edwards, Jr., Mrs. Robert Coffey, and Mrs. James Hudson. Mrs. James Key read the closing meditation. Prior to the study, Mrs. Mullinix presented Miss Agnes Boggs, study chair man, and her assistant. Mrs. Hud son, gifts from the W. S. C. S. in appreciation of their work in planning a most interesting and enjoyable study. Immediately following the study a reception was held in honor of Mrs. Bert Graahm. The honored guest was directed to the refreshment table covered with a white cloth and centered with an arangement of pink and white flowers, with napkins in the bridal motif. Mrs. Horace Mullinix presided at the punch bowl, and Mrs. Howard Callahan served nuts and decorated cake squares. Mrs. G. E. Griffin pre sented the honoree with a gift from the ladies of the church. Bridal Shower Mrs. Bobby Apple, who before her marriage Saturday night, March 2, was Miss Fleta Howell, was presented with an array of lovely and useful gifts at a mis cellaneous shower in her honor by Mrs. Coy Blue. Jr., and Mrs. James Howell at the home of Mrs. June Howell Friday night. Mrs. Apple is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. June Howell of Vass, and the groom’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Apple of Lakeview. Both are graduates of Vass-Lakeview High School, the bride a ‘61 graduate and the groom of the class of ‘57. The couple are in their trailer home in Lakeview. Woman's Club To Meet The Vass Woman’s Club will meet Friday night, March 8, at 7:30 o’clock with Mrs. C. P. Mc Millan at her home. Pink and Blue Shower Mrs. Raymond McLean and Mrs. Roy Blue were hostesses at a pink and blue shower honoring Mrs. Ray Stuart at the home of Mrs. McLean Saturday night. Games were played and refresh ments were enjoyed. Revival A revival meeting is in progress at the Vass Church of God. Fellowship Meeting A fellowship meeting win be held at the Vass Church of God on Monday night, March 11, at 7:00 o’clock. Entertains Mrs. W. A. Muse entertained at open house Thursday night in honor of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Bert Graham. Guests called be tween the hours of 7:30 and 9:00. From the dining table, covered with a white lace cloth over pink, and centered with an arrange ment of pink and white flowers, flanked by two white candles, the guests were served ice cream, cake squares and nuts. Local Boys Will Attend University Science Meeting Two students at East Southern Pines High School are among 155 top students from across North Carolina who will attend a Jun ior Science and Humanities Sym posium at the University of North Carolina March 14-16, starting at 6:30 p.m. The local students—chosen for their outstanding abilities in sci ence and humanities—are: Lin B. Dunn and Charles B. Lewis, who will be accompanied to the sixth annual event by Daniel Kruger, Science teacher at the school. The coming symposium will at tract students from virtually ev ery county in the state and will be highlighted by the presenta tion by six students of theoreti cal scientific papers selected from entries from throughout the state. The symposium is the joint en terprise of the army and private enterprise, undertaken in 1958 to stir the interest of high school students in scientific fields. A nationwide program, with symposia scheduled in 17 states this year, it will be followed by a national gathering at West Point, N. Y., in April. Mrs. Edd McKenzie gave the devotional. Mrs. Roy Williams called the meeting to order. Mrs. Lynn Martin gave the secretary’s report and roll call. There was good attendance. Mrs. W. W. Rankin gave the demonstration on “Care of Roses” which was very interesting to everyone. ’The hostess servied re freshments. The March Home Demonstra tion meeting will be with Mrs. Roy Williams. Mrs. Biessie Thomas gave the devotions. The topic for the month was “Roses.” An interesting and informative lesson on growing and the care of roses was preseted to the nine members atetnding. This large number of small farms is due mainly to the fact that many industrial workers operate farms in their spare time. About 26,000 farms are sharecropped. VA PENSIONS Pensions are paid by the VA to veterans whose disabilities are not service connected and whose income does not exceed certain statutory limits. Pensions are also paid dependents of deceased vet erans whose deaths were not due to service-connected disabilities and whose incomes are within limits fixed by law.
