Barr Stoddart of Invercargill, New Zealand, and Mrs. John F. Hamilton of Auckland, New Zealand. She graduated from Randiiuru School and attended Canterbury University in New Zealand. Mr. Buckminster is the son of Mrs. James How of Pinehurst and the late Harold Chase Buck minster of Boston. A graduate of Aiken Preparatory School, Millbrook School, and La Salle University, he is president of Alcor Industries, Inc. in New York City. He is a member of the Pinehurst Country Club and of the Tin Whistles Club. Mrs. Harrington Weds Donald Blinn Saturday In Home Ceremony Mrs. Sara Tufts Harrington was married Saturday to Donald Blinn, of Westport, Conn. The Rev. Roscoe L. Prince, pastor of the Community Church, officiat ed at the private ceremony, held at noon at the home of the bride’s father, Richard S. Tufts. After a European wedding trip, the Blinns will live in the Parks log cabin, which they have leased. The newly-married couple were honored at a party given Satur day afternoon by Mr. and Mrs. Octave Blake at their home. The Arches. John C. Grier III On Dean's List Ai UNC John C. Grier, III is one of 218 students on the dean’s list at the University of North Carolina for the past semester. He is the only student from Pinehurst on the list published in the Daily Tar Heel. ! A minimum of 15 semester hours, or an average grade of B or over, is the University require ment for the dean’s list. A political science major, John is the son of Dr. and Mrs. John C. Grier, Jr. of Midland Road. He is a 1960 graduate of Pinehurst School. I Ragan Honored By Ciun Laude Society Election At Culver A Pinehurst student, Thomas C Ragan, has been honored for I outstanding academic achieve- I ment by his early election to the j Cum Laude Society at Culver Military Academy. He is the son of Vice Admiral and Mrs. Thomas C Ragan of Pinehurst. Elections to Cum Laude, a na tional society organized for the purpose of recognizing academic achievement at the secondary school level, usually are announc- cil at commencement in June. Ragan was one of three from a student body of 850 who were so honored. In announcing Ragan’s selec tion, Arthur G. Hughes, president of the Culver Chapter of the Cum Laude Society said: “Ragan has demonstrated an intellectual concern in summer studies to illustrate the fact that education is an on-going process. The purpose of his early election is to recognize Culver’s most out standing students and to stimu late intellectual concern within the rest of the student body.” Ragan, who is a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition, conducted a self- directed Spanish program last summer in an effort to prepare himself for an advanced course in Spanish during the current aca demic year. He returned to Cul ver in the fall, took a test in Spanish 3, the course in which he had prepared himself without !h° assistance of an instructor, and earned a “B”. He qualified and is enrolled in Spanish 4, the honors section. The bride is the grandniece of Mrs. Samuel G, Allen of Pine hurst who attended the wedding and reception. Winners Named In 3 Country Club Events Twenty-eight members turned fiut for Friday’s club tournament for women, at stroke play for best ball of all four partners on Number Three Course. The team of Mrs. W. J. Burke, Mrs. R. R. MacKenzie, Mrs. W. C. Harris and Mrs. J. B. von Schlegell took top honors with 33-35-68. Runners up were Mrs. D. O. Delany, Mrs. M. T. Pishko. Mrs. R. W. Calloway and Mrs. J. E. Barry at 34-35-69; while other winners were Mrs. J. J. Connor and Mrs. A. N. Derouin. Men's Event The tourney for men, a par- bogey contest for better ball of pair postponed from Wednesday and played on Niunber Five, had an entry of 40. Tieing at 78 points for first nlace were W. J. Burke and J. F. Remington and J. J. Conners and P. V. Tufts, each team posting an outgoing 38 and an incoming 40. In second place were J. B. von Schlegell and F. W. Bellows, 34 out and 42 in for 76; other winners were B. J. Darling, Fred Zoellin and W. N. Mellow. Non-Resident Winners The non - resident members events for women and men, both individual par-bogey contests, were won by Mrs. Calloway, registering a front side 40 and a back nine 34 for 74 points on Number Three, and Mr. Zoellin, with an outgoing 32 and an in coming 38 for 70 on Number Five. Mrs. Webb, Former Teacher Here, Dies Mrs. Sara Cobb Webb, wife of Ercell S. Webb died last Tuesdaj" morning at her home in Green ville, N. C. Funeral services were conducted at the Memorial Baptist Church, Wednesday at 3 p.m., by her pastor, the Rev. Percy Up church. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. Webb was born and rear ed in Parkton and she attended Meredith College in Raleigh and East Carolina College, graduating in 1929. She taught school in Grifton, Pinehurst, and Raleigh, prior to her marriage. Moving to Greenville from Raleigh in 1945, she was a mem ber of the Memorial Baptist Church. Surviving are her hus band; one daughter. Miss Sara Collier Webb, a student at Wake Forest College, Winston - Salem; and her mother. Mrs. Webb and her husband, who was a basketball coach at the Pinehurst School when his wife taught here, yearly attended the meetings of the Dairymen’s association, held here in January. Ann Ehrhardt Elected Veep, Student Center Board At St. Andrews Ann Ehrhardt of Pinehurst has been elected vice-president of the Student Center Board of St. Andrews Presbyterian College. A rising junior, Miss Ehrhardt is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Ehrhardt, Jr. of Pinehurst. She has been acting vice-presi dent of the Board and a member of its publicityy committee this year. Newly elected officers will be installed in April. Mrs. MacKenzie To Entertain Woman’s Exchange Members The executive board of the Sandhills Woman’s Exchange will meet Friday, March 8, at 10 a.m. at the home of the vice president, Mrs. Frank R. Gramelsbach. Members of the Exchange will be entertained at the monthly meeting and tea by Mrs Roland R. MacKenzie at her home on Monday, March 11, at 3 p.m. soie featured slightly above the waistline in the back. Miss Louise Myers of New York, a cousin of the bride, and Miss Elizabeth Reid, of Evanston, were junior bridesmaids. They wore white organza skirts with gold sateen tops and carried white stephanitis. , Bouquets of tulips and hya cinths decorated the Evanston Golf Club where the reception was held. Funeral Held For Mrs. Gilliland, 89 Mrs. Della Leslie Gilliland, 89, died Sunday at the home of her son, Leslie GiUiland in Pinehurst. Funeral services were held Wed nesday at the Powell Funeral Home, Southern Pines, conducted by the Rev. R. L, Prince, pastor of the Pinehurst Community Church. Burial was in Morris Chapel Cemetery in Harnett County. Surviving in addition to her son are five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ora Douglas, and two brothers, L. G. and Oscar Leslie, aU of Harnett County. Pinehurst School Highlights BY BARBARA COLE AND HEIDI > GRAMLSBACH Themes Completed Last week the juniors complet ed their World Peace themes, which were handed in to Miss Carolyn Harriss and Bob Gillis, who teach the juniors U. S. his tory. Miss Harriss and Mr. Gillis wiU select five or six semi-fina lists who will present their speeches to a panel of teachers. The teachers v/ill select the two finalists who will give their speaches at a student body meet ing on March 11. At a Lion’s Club dinner on March 13, the two finalists will again present their speeches, and at that time, the winner will be selected. Tests Given On Tuesday, the National Edu cational Development Tests were administered to all freshmen and sophomores during the morning hours. Junior-Senior Prom Set The juniors have announced Ap ril 27 as the date for the Junior- Senior Prom, which is given by the juniors for the seniors. The date is all that anyone, except the juniors, know about the prom—everything is being kept a secret. Glee Club Practicing The Glee Club is busy practic ing for the annual Spring Festi val which is to be held in Aber deen. Fourteen boys and twenty- two girls will be sent from Pine hurst. The Glee Club is directed by Miss Timmons. To Represent Moore By defeating Robbins’ boys 62- 44, our boys’ basketball team won the Moore County Basketball tournament on Monday night at Carthage gymnasium. Already Moore County Conference cham pions, the Rebels, with a 29 game winning streak, go to Red Springs on March 13 to represent Moore County in the District play-offs. Cubs Plant Azaleas At Community Church Five members of Den 1, Pine hurst Cub Scouts, Monday com pleted as a service project the planting of four azaleas on the grounds of the Community church. The azaleas, given by Daniel P. McDonald, ‘were planted in honor of the Sandhills Blrother- hopd Association by Jeff ViaU, Ray Monroe, Duncan H. McLeod, Wade Garner, and Marshall Lewis. LENTEN SERVICES The Village Chapel is hold ing Holy Communion services at 5 p.m. on Fridays, during Lent. At the Sacred Heart Catholic church.
