(Hemmer photo) The arrest of four Sanford youths at Sanford Monday is be lieved to have stopped a series of robberies and attempted robber ies of vending machines in Moore, Lee and Chatham Coun ties, investigating officers said this week. A fifth young man, from Cumnock in Lee County, was being sought. Five of the robberies, or at tempts, in Moore took place early Sunday morning, in Aberdeen, Pinebluff and Eagle Springs, fol lowing two at Vass .some 10 days before. Damage done to nearly all the machines, including those not broken open, was extensive, according to Moore County Chief Deputy H. H. Grimm. In the machines opened only small amounts of change were secured and the total of damage was far greater than the “take.” None of the money was recovered. A car seen at Eagle Springs Sunday, where the robbers were apparently frightened away be fore they could start to work, provided the clue which led to the arrests. Two of the boys, Ernest P. Dowdy III, 18, and Richard Kel- l,y, 17, the only ones admitting to the thefts in Lee, were tried Tuesday in Lee County Court and were given probationary terms. Along with Larry Thomas, 19, they are under bond for trial next Monday in Moore Recorders Court, and a Moore County war rant is also out for Fred Fackrell, 22, of Cumnock.
