THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 1963 THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina Page SEVENTEEN Former Visitor, Mrs. Adams, 90, Succumbs Friday Mrs. Mary Davenport Hartwell Adams, 90, died Friday at her home in Somerville, N. J., fol lowing a long illness. She was the widow of Horatio M. Adams, founder of the Adams Chewing Gum Company, who died in 1956 at the age of 102. Her first husband. Joseph James Thomas Carter, died in 1912. Mr. and Mrs. Adams were win ter residents here for many ye^rs and following his death, Mrs. Adams and her sister, Mrs. Rufus Sprague of Tulsa, Okla, who survives her, were season guests at The Berkshire. Mrs. Sprague has been coming to the Hollywood Hotel for the past few winters and was a guest there this past season. Funeral services at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Somerville were held Monday afternoon at 2 p. m. with burial following in the Somerville cemetery. Attending the services were Mrs. Adams’s oniy son, Hugh Wil liam Carter, and his wife, of Pinehilrst; their son, Hugh Wil liam, Jr., of Winston-Salem and their two daughters, Mrs. John Codington of Wilmington, N. C. and Mrs. Edward Clayton, Jr., and her husband, oE Hempstead, Long Island. Mrs. Adams was active in the Colonial Dames, the Huguenot and the Mayflower Societies. New Arrival Mr. and Mrs. Raeford Wells announce the arrival of a daugh ter Saturday, at Moore Memorial Hospital. The baby weighed eight pounds, nine and a half ounces, and has been named Cynthia Jo. The Wells have two sons, Jackie and Jimmy. Mrs. Wells is the former Mary Jo Beam, and Mr. I Wells is basketbail coach and teacher at Aberdeen High School. Baptist Association Youth Night The Baptist Association Youth Night (for youth from all the Baptist Churches from Moore County) of the Sandhill Baptist Association, will meet on Mon day evening, March 25, at 7:30, at the First Baptist Church, Southern Pines. B^id^tl Party Miss Delores Garner was hon ored by Mrs. M. J. Muse and Mrs. Fred Blue on Thursday eve ning, March 14, at the home of Mrs. Muse. The occasion was a I miscellaneous shower for Miss I Garner who became the bride of Ronnie Olson of Fort Bragg on j Tuesday evening in the Post Chapel at Ft. Bragg. Several bridal games were en joyed by the group, after which Miss Garner opened and gra ciously acknowledged her lovely gifts. Guests were invited into the dining room where the refresh ment table was overlaid with a lovely lace cloth. A center ar rangement of white gladiola and greenery was flanked by burn ing white tapers in crystal hold ers. Guests enjoyed bridal cakes, fruit punch and mints and nuts. Twenty guests attended. At GoveroFs Mansion House Speaker and Mrs. H. Clifton Blue attended the recep tion given by Governor and Mrs. Terry Sanford at the Governor’s Mansion last Thursday evening and were a part of the receiving line for the occasion, which hon ored members of the General As sembly. UDC Meet Several members of the John Blue Chapter of the UDC attend ed the District Meeting in Dunn on 'Saturday. Included were Mrs. O. A. Speight, Mrs. C. S. Patch, Mrs. -F./ M. ‘ Dwight and Mrs. George Martin. Briefs Miss Kate Stewart of Washing ton, D. C. visited her mother, Mrs. Robert Stewart at the Pine- hurst Convalescent Home during the weekend and her sister. Miss Lena Stewart, who is residing in Southern Pines for two months. Joining them for dinner Sunday evening were Mrs. E. R. Buchan of Sanford, Mr. and Mrs. John Buchan and family of Raleigh, and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Buchan and family of Aberdeen, The Rev. R. D. Spear, Jr. is taking part in a Senool of Mis sions in Warrenton this week. Those attending the graveside services of Miss Floy Martin in Chapel Hill last Tuesday were Mrs. E. M. Medlin, Mrs. C. E. Pleasants, Mrs. R. S. Gwyn, Mrs. Robert VanderVoort, Miss Bess Gunter, and Mrs. George Martin. Miss Martin lived in Aberdeen at one time and was a faithful Sun day School teacher at Page Me morial Methodist Church. Mrs. Karl Pohl and Miss Alice Pohl of Raleigh visited friends in Aberdeen Sunday and attended the funeral of Robert N. Page, Jr. Mrs. E. T. Davidson underwent surgery at Moore Memorial Hos pital ’Tuesday morning. Mrs. David Edge and children arrived Monday for a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Edge. Jimmy Kimbrell of Columbia, S. C. visited Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Kimbrell Saturday afternoon. Baptist Youth Of Association To Gather Here The Annual Baptist Association- al Youth Night for the Sandhills (Moore County) Association will be held Monday night at 8 in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church. Baptist youth from over Moore County will gather for the rally. The Rev. R. Tommy Funder- burke, pastor of the Mulberry Baptist Church, Charlotte, will bring the inspirational message for the evening. The Rev. Mr. Funderburke is a native of Ashe- boro, and holds a B.A. degree from Wake Forest College and a B.D. degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. A young man, he is well-liked by young people and is in great de mand as a speaker. Special music will be furnished by the Youth Choir of the local Baptist Church, accompanied by Miss Dianne Fields and directed by the pastor, the Rev. Maynard Mangum.
