Tied at 79 for first place in the
Tin Whistles Seniors Champion
ship played Thursday at the
Pinehurst Club were William S.
Anderson, 38-41, and Raymond
E. North, 40-39. They will play
off the tie at a later date.
Charles H. Hyde, playing in
the Class A bracket of the an
nual tournament for members 55
and over, scored 99-32-67 to win
the Stuart H. Patterson Trophy.
Other winners in classes, di

between W. S. Anderson, 79-8-71

$500 Given For
Better Lighting
At Athletic Field
Announcement was made this
week of the gift of $500 to the
Pinehurst Recreation Association
from the Pinehurst Community
Foundation, Inc.
The money was to be used to
improve lighting facilities on the
local athletic field for the sum
mer softball program and other
night games.

each day on the Championship

Mr. and Mrs. Henry M. Justi,
Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa. have
purchased the home of Mrs.
Harry J. Haas situated on Mid
land Road facing the No. 2 golf
course of the Pinehurst Country
Club.
Mr. Justi is a member of the
Pinehurst Country Club, and the
Tin Whistles Club here, and of
the Merion Gk)lf Club in Philadel
phia. He is president of Sartomer
Resins, Inc., chairman of the
board of H. D. Justi & Son, Inc.,
a member of the Colonial Society
and Sons of the Revolution, the
governor of the Society of May
flower Descendants in Pennsyl
vania. He is also a trustee and
past president of the American
Onclologic Hospital, an institu
tion which has recently revelop-
ed a new cure for a certain type
of cancer and a director of the
United Fund in Philadelphia.

TO ATTEND SPECIAL SCHOOL—Two Pinehurst High School
juniors—Betsy Grier and Jennifer Owens—have been selected
by the school, and Westex-n Carolina College, to attend the
superior and gifted student summer program at the college
in Cullowhee. They will join the gifted group which will study
English. They were chosen on the basis of high school grades
and the National Achievement and Aptitude Tests. Because of
the excellent testing program of the Pinehurst School, the two
nominees were not required to take any additional tests. Jennifer
is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Francis L. Owens and Betsy’s
parents are Dr. and Mrs. J. C. Grier, Jr.

annual Pinehurst Volunteer Fire
men’s benefit dance on Friday,
April 19.

m. to 1 a. m. at the affair, to be
held at the Pinehurst Country
Club.

Elkins Trophy
In Foils Event
Mrs. John M. Reeves won the
Louise Elkins trophy in the Sil
ver Foils Club’s annual memori
al tournament played last Wed
nesday by 62 members. The win
ner scored 84-16-68 for low net
of the field.
Mrs. Albert L. Sneed scored
87-18-69 to take first prize in the
Class A division for non-winners
of the current season. In second
place was Mrs. E. Bowen Quillen,
91-19-72.
Class B was won by Mrs. Eric
Nelson, registering 93-24-69; Mrs.
William F. Hollister was runner-
up with 100-29-71.
Mrs. John W. Lindsay. Mrs. John
E. Barry, Jr. was again elected
club captain.
Elected to serve terms of three
years on the board'of governors
were Mrs. Thomas C. Darst, Jr.,
Mrs. Homer H. Johnson and Mrs.
Stuart H. Patterson. Mrs. Patter
son, by unanimous vote of the
members, was made an honorary
member.
Elected to membership at the
meeting was Mrs. James H. Mc-
Alvin of Lake Forest, Ill.

At the annual meeting and tea
of the Silver Foils Club, held
Tuesday at the Pinehurst Cdun-
try Club, Mrs. Michael T. Pish-
ko was reelected president for
the coming year.

Mrs. Walter G. Robins; treasurer.
Troiters Try For
Records Apr. 18
An official record meeting will
be held Thursday, April 18, at
10 a. m. at the Pinehurst mile
track.
Under auspices of the Pine
hurst Driving and Training Club,
the “time trials” are held each
spring in order that young trot
ters and pacers that have train
ed at the Pinehurst Race Track
can acquire official records en
abling them to be entered in
spring and summer races.
The record meeting is sanc
tioned by the U. S. Trotting As-
i sociation and spectators are wel-
come.

the organization’s final monthly
meeting and tea of the season
Monday afternoon at her Linden
Road home.
Mrs. H. M. Taylor poured tea
and Mrs. Stuart Cutler served
coffee during the social hour fol
lowing the business session.

Scoring his first hole-in-one
Monday was Pinehurst cottag'T
William J. Burke, whose seven-
iron tee shot from the 14th hole
of the No. 4 course wound up in
the cup. This was the 12th re
corded hole-in-one for the sea
son at the Pinehurst Country
Club, and sixth for a country
club member. Playing with Mr.
Burke were Robert F. Beard,
W. E. Fowler and Harry M. Tay
lor.

Biehn, 95-25; Mrs. J. J. Connor,
86-16; and Mrs. K. C. Bell, 85-15.
Posting 86-19-67 in the men’s
event was A. M. Bond, who tied
with A. Clark Bedford, 97-30;
