Numerous Conservation Plans By
Moore Farmers, Landowners Noted
By WILLARD K. KELLER
Work Unit Conservationist
Soil Conservation Service
During the first three months
of 1963, conservation farm plans
have been developed by a num
ber of Moore county farmers.
Cary McLeod, Route 3, Carth
age, made a plan for one tract
of 38 acres, which changes a long
standing system. For some time
he has been dissatisfied with his
terrace system. This year he is
trying strip cropping.
Norman Cagle, Carthage, has
made a plan for a tract of land
which joins land owned by Joe
CaddelL Part of that plan is a
pond for irrigation constructed
jointly with Mr. Caddell, now
nearly full of water.
Dr. W. W. Allen’s plan is al
most entirely for management of
his woodland near Aberdeen.
Many of the details and cost-re
turn features of this plan were
furnished by Benny Fulcher, as
sistant county agent and forester.

A. G. Hall, St. Pauls, has made
a farm plan which utilizes fe.scue j*
in rotation with tobacco, cor |
pletely revises his field layout,
and makesprovisions for new ‘
pastur.3 program. T. P. Jones,
Cameron, has started a new pro-1
gram based on a plan. Alton I •
Green, Route 2, Carthage, devel- 1
oped a plan which includes in-
stallation of tile drains, con
structed grass waterways and re-
vis*2d terrace system.
A “non-farm” conservation
plan was developed by Felton
Marsh, Route 2, Carthage, for his
5 1-2 acres. Even this little plan
has a pond and a pasture pro
gram. Two of Moore county’s:
leading conservation farmers, H.:
N. Scott, Route 3, and J. B. Mc
Leod, Routs 2, Carthage, have
revised their old conservation
farm plans to fit their more mod
ern methods, especialljy to fit
their plans for irrigation.
What is a soil and water con
servation farm plan? Every farm
er knows his farm is different
from any other farm, his land is
different than anyone else’s land.
Every farmer continually makes
and revises plans for his farm—
some do it in their head, others
put it on paper. When' a farmer
niakes plans to conserve his land
for the future while increasing
its production now—that is con
servation farm planning. 'When
he does it with a trained soil con
servationist he has a plan which
will fit the conservation needs of
his land based on scientific In
formation and research, and de
veloped in a systematic, orderly
manner.
