TELW:'^-2335 ABE.RPEEN HESOLUTION of ASSIGNMENT Southern Pines City Board of Education The following resolution was proposed by Dr. McLean, sec onded by Mr. York, and was duly adopted by the Board: t f WHEREAS, The Board previ ously adopted rules and regula tions governing assignments and change of assignment for the chil dren in this administrative unit to best promote an orderly and efficient procedure for making applications for assignment or change of assignment; AND WHEREAS, The Board has the duty and final responsi bility for assigning the children in this administrative unit to a school; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RE SOLVED by the Southern Pines City Board of Education in order to best promote the orderly and efficient administration of the public schools in this unit, the ef fective instruction of the pupils subject to assignment by the Board, and the health, safety and general welfare of such pupils, and each of them, hereby assgns the children of this administra tive unit as follows: A. (1) Each child who attended school in the Southern Pines Administrative Unit during the school year 1962- 63 is assigned to the same school for the year 1963- 64. (2) All other children will be assigned to a school upon request for admission when received by the Board. B. J27 For the school year 1963- 64, the parents of any child of school age who desire that such a child attend a specific school other than the school to which he has been assign ed shall file written appli cation to the Board of Ed ucation through the su perintendent of schools provided by the general rules and regulations as adopted by this Board. Failure to file such an ap plication on or before July 6, 1963 shall indicate sat isfactory assignment made by the Board of Education. K. Carpenter, Jr. attended the 43rd annual Gospel Sing at Ben son Sunday. Of particular interest to those from Pinebluff was the Trio call ed the Melodettes, from the Park- view Baptist Church in Newport News, Va. This group consisted of Mrs. Dorothy Cooper, Mrs. Vir ginia Howell and Mrs. Ethel Pat rick Brown, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Mae Melvin. With their selection, “I Have Found the Answer,” the Melo dettes won a beautiful silver tro phy as first prize in the Trio Cate gory, in which they competed against 15 other groups. The three are native North Car- Carolinians. Personals David Wilson has returned to his home in Goldsboro after spending two weeks with his cou sin, Jimmy Carpenter. Mr. and Mrs. George Perry Lawrence and sons, George and Tommy of Denver, Colo, spent last week with his sister, Mrs. Albert Troutman, Sr. and Mr. Troutman. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Pickier of Wilmington visited his grand mother, Mrs. J. W. Picker, Satur day. Mr. and Mrs. John R. Morgan and son, Bobby, returned home Tuesday after spending a week in Flint, Mich, with their daugh ter, Mrs. Bobby H. Ziel, and Mr. Ziel. A|1C John David Morgan of Kinchelee AFB joined them there for the week. Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Buchanan, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brock and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Monroe went to Lilesville Saturday night to attend a dinner and for re union of classes from 1920 through 1960 of Lilesville High School. Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Thomas of Gulfport, Fla. have arrived for a visit with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Carpenter and daughter. Miss Ann Carpen ter, and Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Car penter, Sr. visited their sister, Mrs. Ethel Wilson in Goldsboro Friday. Mr. and Mrs. John Fiddner, Jr. and children, of Hampton, Vcu, are visiting his mother, Mrs. John Fiddner, Sr. Miss Nancy McCaskill spent the weekend in Robbins with her cou sin, Miss Linda Fay McCaskill. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Alpert and daughter. Miss Saraleslie, are spending several days at Myrtle Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Adams and children, Deborah and Bill, of Greensboro, spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Adams, Sr. They also visited his brother, E. G. Adams, Jr., who is a patient at Moore Me morial Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Carpenter, Sr. and Mrs. Ehrman Pickier vis ited their brother, T. J. Tarlton, and Mrs. Tarlton and sister, Mrs. E. A. Helms, and Mr. Helms, in Sanford Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. R. G. McCaskill went to Candor Sunday after noon for a visit with his mother. VASS NEWS & PERSONALS Sunrise Theatre The most modern “hospital” in the United States today is a movie set at Universal Studio. Designed for use in the Ross Hunter production, '‘Tammy and the Doctor” (to be seen at the Sunrise Theatre) Sunday, Mon day and Tuesday, starring Sandra Dee, Peter Fonda, Macdonald Carey and Beulah Bondi, the hos pital set is completely functional and could even be used for ac tual surgery. Covering virtually all of the studio’s second largest stage, the set includes admitting room, doc tors’ offices, patients’ rooms, oper ating room, doctors’ wash room and nurses quarters. Fully half of the picture was shot in various parts of this set —even including many of the ro- rrifantic scenes between Sandra and young Fonda, who is making his movie debut in this film after scoring a startling success on Broadway. BY MRS. CHARLES CAMERON Wedding 'The marriage of Miss Linda Katherine Hales, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. J. D. Hales, Jr. to Clarence Russell Duncan, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan, Sr. of Lincolnton was solemnized at 4:30 on Saturday afternoon, June 15, in the Vass Baptist Church. Bride's Parents Entertain The bride’s parents entertained at a cake cutting Friday night following the rehearsal in the din ing hall at the Dixie Inn. Miss Clara Hales of Pikeville served the cake after the honored couple cut the first piece. Mrs. R. M. Stanberry of Candler, presided at the punch bowl. Among the 70 guests were members of the wedding party and immediate families, and guests of the com munity and surrounding com munities. Out-of-town guests were the bride’s grandmother, Mrs. John Lindsey, of Almond, and an uncle and aunt of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Lindsey, and children, Mike, Ann, and Debbie, of Hazel wood. Debbie was a flower girl, and Tommie Stanberry, ringbear- er. The Rev. and Mrs. Denny Spears of Aberdeen and the Rev. Norman Arant of Goldsboro were also present. The wedding was directed by Mrs. Spears. Mrs. R. A. Evans was in charge of the decorations. Entertains At Luncheon Pre-nuptial courtesy was paid Miss Linda Hales, when Mrs. Fred Taylor entertained at a bridesmaids’ luncheon at her home, June 15. A yellow and white color note prevailed in the de corations and appointments. Mrs. Russell Tate received the guests and served punch. Afterwards, guests were invited into the din ing room where the luncheon was served at the dining table cen tered with an arrangement of white snapdragons, yellow roses, and baby’s breath. ZIP Code The Post Office Department’s improved system of mail dispatch and delivery goes into effect nationally, July 1, according to announcement this week by local Postmaster, A. M. Callahan. In making the announcement, Postmaster Callahan urged that all persons here learn the ZIP Code number for Vass- 28394. This should follow the city and state in addresses on all outgoing correspondence, as in the follow ing example; John Doe, Vass, North Carolina- 28394. Dog Show The Lee County Fox Hunting Club of Little River and Vass sponsored their Third Annual Fox Hunting Association Dog Show last Friday night at the Sanford Fair Grounds, with approximately 300 people attending. Over 50 dogs were displayed by the mem bers. Among the members, with their orize winning dogs, were Calvin Blue of Route 3, Carthage and Lewis Garner of Route 2, Vass. Calvin received top awards in the Walker division. This was his first entry in the event. Blue owns 14 Walkers. Lewis received first place award in the all age competions with his five-year-old Walker. Lewis has 12 other fine dogs at home like the champion. Life Membership Pins Life membership pins and certi ficates were presented to Mrs. S. R. Smith and Mrs. C. L. Tyson during the morning worship ser vice on Sunday, June 6. Mrs. Smith nad Mrs. Tyson are mem bers of Circle 1, of the WSCS. Pack Meeting Outdoor fellowship was enjoy ed at the regular Pack Meeting of the Cub Scouts, when parents, leaders and friends joined the Cubs for a weiner roast at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Mul- linix Friday evening. Sixteen Den members, with parents and lead ers, Mrs. Roby Furrell, Mrs. Nor man Epler and Mrs. Buddie Mc Rae, were present. McKenzie Promoted In National Guard Fred L. McKenzie has been promoted from second to first lieutenant in the National Guard. He is platoon leader with Com pany C, 21252 Armor Bn., and re turned Sunday from two weeks of field training at Fort Stewart, Ga. He is married to the former Betty Black of Pinehurst. They live on the Carthage road in Southern Pines. The announcement of the fol lowing officers were given as follows: New Cubmaster — Bill Coe; Commissioners, Roby Fu- trell. Bill Jessup; Institutional Representative, Charles R. Pope. Gizl Scout Day Camp Leaders and Brownie Scouts of Vass Troop 125 who attended the Girl Scout Day Camp held at Forest Lake, near Lakeview, from Tuesday through Friday were: Mrs. James Hudson, Mrs. Jack Morgan, Mrs. Robert Coffey and Mrs. Watt Blue. The nine Brownie members — Connie Sue Hudson, Marsha Hudson, Sue Bullock, Laura and Nancy Coffey, Carol Klingenschmidt, Sally Mac Blue, companying guests Sherry Hud son, Laura Blue and Carol Creath of Pinehurst house guests of Martha Morgan at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Morgan. Vacation Bible School Vacation Bible School came to a close on Friday morning at the Vass Baptist church with com mencement and parents’ night on Sunday night. The School had an enrollment of 59 with a daily attendance of 47. The Rev. J. D. Hales was principal and Miss Joan Hales, pianist. The Departments were as follows: Beginner, Mrs. Harvey Whitaker; Primary, Mrs. J. D. Hales; Junior; Mrs. W. V. Nix; Intermediate by Mrs. Fred Taylor. WMS Meets The WMS met in the home of Mrs. Russell Tate for their regu lar monthly meeting on Monday night. Mrs. Harvey Whitaker pre sented the pro^am, with several members assisting with parts on the monthly magazine, “The Royal Service,” from the begin ning to the present circulation. Mrs. Fred Taylor, president pre sided over the business and com mittee reports were heard from the chairman. The hostess served refreshments. Personals Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Muse and Mrs. S. R. Smith attended the wedding of Miss Jane Muse Gib son in Rockingham Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Edwards spent last week at Wrightsville Beach. During the weekend, they visited relatives in Saluda, S. C. Mike Gschwind spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Ted Klingenschmidt in Southern Pines. Lt. Col. and Mrs. P. B. Irby and family of Carlisle Barracks Pa. are visiting here with her mother, A. M. Cameron, and his relatives in Raleigh. Lt. Col. Irby is in Georgia this week attending school. After a month’s furlough, he and his family will leave for Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hinsley and boys, Ronnie and Ricky, and Dock Hinsley of Rock Hill, S. C. spent the weekend here with their mother, Mrs. Marie Hinsley, and her relatives in the White Hill Community. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Callahan and family of Maryland were Friday evening callers in the home of his brother, with Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Callahan. Mr. and Mrs. John McDermott and children, Johnny and Betty Jo were Sunday visitors here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. M. McDermott. Mrs. McDermott and children remained until Tuesday for a visit with other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Hal Womble and children, Vann and Teresa, en- route to their home in Raleigh from a week visit with his sister in Mianii, Fla., called on her mother, Mrs. Daniel Boggs and family Sunday. The Callahan Reunion, held an nually at the 4-H Camp at White Lake on the fourth Sunday in June, was attended by a, number of relatives and friends. Going down for the night on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Callahan, Mr. and Mrs. June Mc Caskill and family, and Mrs. Katherine Primm of the Farm Life Community; Mr. and Mrs. Edd Callahan and family. Miss Ann Frye, Miss Amy Callahan, Joe Frye, Mr. and Mrs. Alton Callahan and daughter. Miss Patsy Callahan. On Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Callahan and Randy Cameron went for the day. Mr. and Mrs. Allan Thompson and children of Charlotte were weekend visitors here with Mr. and Mrs. D. H. McGill, Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Baker and family on Route 2, Vass, and of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Baker in San ford. Debbie McGill who had been visiting with her grand parents returned home with them. Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Baker re ceived the announcement of a new niece and nephew, twins, bom to Mr. and Mrs. Furman Baker at Lee Memorial Hospital last week. The parents have named them David Wayne and Doris Lane. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Tom Baker, who reside at Vass, Route 2, before moving to Sanford where they have lived the past few years.
