Cox of Southern Pines, president of the Cape Fear Football Conference, announcies the annual summer meeting of the conference at Homer Res taurant in Fayetteville on August 14, at 6:30 p.m. There are four high schools in Moore County that participate in the Cape Fear Conference: Aber deen, Carthage, Elise High of Robbins and Southern Pines. Other schools in the conference are: Ellerbe, Laurel Hill, Little field, Red Springs, Rowland and St. Pauls. Each school will be represented at the meeting by the superinten dent, principal and coaches and its purpose is to make plans for the 1963 football season. Mr. Cox, president of the con ference, is principal of East Southern Pines High School. He succeeds Richard Rogers, princi pal of St. Pauls High School. Other officers are George S. Tay lor, vice president, principal of Littlefield High School; and Lew is D. Moore, secretary-treasurer, principal of Rowland High School. Cox, principal of East Southern Pines High School, left today to attend the NCEA Officers Conference at Mars Hill College. The conference will be in session through Sunday, Aug ust 11. Mr. Cox is president of the local unit of the North Carolina Educational Association whose membership includes the staff of the East Southern Pines schools. The purpose of the meeting is to acquaint new officers with their duties as leaders in one of the largest teacher organizations in the state. The conference will be under the direction of Dr. A. C. Daw son. executive secretary of the NCEA and former superintendent of schools in Southern Pines. Robbins Cannery Bnsy These Days Tuesdays and Fridays are busy days in the basement floor of a white frame building perched on a hillside behind Elise High School at Robbins. Cars are making their way all day up and down the twisting driveway past the athletic field. Whole families alight from them, loaded with fresh farm produce. They leave several hours later with dozens, even hundreds, of cans. This is the Robbins Cannery, a project of the school’s vocational agriculture department, operated by W. J. Thrailkill, agriculture teacher, every July and August for the past 17 years. Vocational agriculture teachers are employed for 12 months of the year, giving part of their time to community service. Accidents claimed the lives of 223 North Carolinians in May, 1963, according to information re leased by the Public Health Sta tistics Section of the State Board of Health in mid-July. Sixty- thnse of these deaths I'esulted from home and farm accidents. The accident toll for the first five months of the year is 1,070 deaths, slightly greater than the 1,052 deaths during the corres ponding five-month period in 1962.
