Robbins Cannery
Bnsy These Days
Tuesdays and Fridays are busy
days in the basement floor of a
white frame building perched on
a hillside behind Elise High
School at Robbins.
Cars are making their way all
day up and down the twisting
driveway past the athletic field.
Whole families alight from them,
loaded with fresh farm produce.
They leave several hours later
with dozens, even hundreds, of
cans.
This is the Robbins Cannery, a
project of the school’s vocational
agriculture department, operated
by W. J. Thrailkill, agriculture
teacher, every July and August
for the past 17 years.
Vocational agriculture teachers
are employed for 12 months of the
year, giving part of their time to
community service.
