Kilmer Forest Is Unique Memorial
Although “Joyce Kilmer’s tree”
will soon disappear from the
campus of his alma mater, an
entire forest deep in the North
Carolina mountains flourishes
in memory of the soldier-poet
who wrote “Trees.”
The stately white oak which
inspired the poem is on the cam
pus of Rutgers University in New
Brunswick, N. J., where it was an
nounced recently that the tree
would have to be cut down be
cause all efforts to save it from
the ravages of old age had failed.

hala National Forest has been set
aside since 1936 to stand for all
time as a living monument.
The entrance to Joyce Kilmer
Memorial Forest is 15 miles
northwest of Robbinsville, North
Carolina, and accessible from U.
S. Highway 129 by a Forest Serv

glade where there is a picnic area.
Along more than 20 miles of
marked hiking trails originating

Forest can explore one of the
most impressive virgin forests in
America.

In a pinch you can cut a half
inch band of rubber from a heavy
truck inner tube and use it as a
temporary replacement for a
broken fan belt. It’ll work if you
drive very slowly and cautiously.
