Poultry Chain
Pullets Bring
$3.15 At Sale
By GAHLAND D. McCULLEN
Assistant Agriculture
Extension Agent
Seven Moore County 4-H Club
members exhibited pullets at the
Poultry Show and Sale which
was held at the Fairgrounds in
Carthage on September 5. All are
members of the 4-H Poultry
Chain. During the past six months
they fed and managed their
flocks of Harco Reds and kept
records of their feed and manage
ment expenses.
Five of the club members had
a flock of 100 each and the other
two members had a flock of 500
each on the "Go to - College
Plan.” For each 100 chicks re
ceived last March, the 4-H’ers re
turned 12 of their prize pullets
for the show. They were judged
for egg production, maturity, and
body weight.
Blue ribbons were won by the
following exhibitors: Linda
Baker, Larry Matthews (flock of
500), Sammy Fishel, Everett
Sheffield and Raymond Sheffield.
Lassie Scott, Jr., was the winner
of a white ribbon; and Phillip
Hussey (flock of 500) won a red
ribbon.
Tom Morris, extension poultry
specialist from North Carolina
State College was the judge.
After being judged, the flocks
were sold at auction. The pro
ceeds from the sale will be used
to purchase chicks for new 4-H
Poultry Chain members next
spring. The average price per pul
let was $3.15.
A. B. Parker, Jr., of Vass was
auctioneer for the sale.
MILLIONS LISTEN
It is estimated that many mil
lions of people throughout the
world listen to the regular pro
grams of the Voice of America
which are transmitted each day.
In times of crisis, this number
jumps into the hundreds of mil
lions of people, and it gives us in
the United States a unique way
of re aching people b.ehind the
Iron Curtain ,and giving them the
message of freedom and the Uni
ted States.
GROUND COVERS
Ground covers are substitutes
for grass in those areas of the
landscape where grass is difficult
to grow. Most of the plants used
for ground covers are low grow
ing with spreading habit. Some
spread by underground or sur
face runners while others spread
by the rooting of stems that come
in contact with the soil. When
good plants are use^ and proper
ly fed and watered, the spreading
types should be well established
in about one year.
