This month—February 12—our
nation will again observe the
birthday of Abraham Lincoln, our
great Civil War President and
America’s most renowned self-
taught scholar. Do you remember
the stories of Young Abe and the
burning desire for knowledge that
forced him to hike through snow
drifts many miles to borrow books
that he read by the flickering
light of the fireplace?
How do you think Lincoln' the
boy would react to today’s mod
ern public library, where the sub
ject matter in thousands of books
covers virtually everything a
child growing into maturity needs
to know? He would have been
thrilled beyond comprehension!
You have it within your power
to guide your child into the same
lifelong interest in “finding out
why” that motivated Mr. Lincoln.
Take your child with you to your
local library. Bookmobile or
County Library. Let him pursue
his interests in everything from
art and architecture to whales
and zoology. Encourage him to

A group of the close friends of
Mrs. James B. Black were hosts
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. B.
Hardee for a surprise birthday
party for her last Friday night. A
buffet dinner was served. After
much urging, Judy finally ac
knowledged that she and Jack
Benny were the same age of 39.

Kindle who recently moved from
Pittsburgh, Pa., to their new
home in Whispering Pines on

schoten had as their dinner guests
last Saturday night, Mr. and Mrs.
Stanley Van Natter and Mr. and
Mrs. George N. Adams. The Van
Benschotens are making plans to
move to Norfolk, Va., where their
son is in business. The date of
their moving has not been set,
but they will be missed from the
Whispering Pines community.
