mend maintaining the supple
mental tax in the Aberdeen-Pine-
hurst-Southern Pines-West End
districts at a 30c-$100 level
with this supplemental tax to be
spent only in these school dis
tricts. Ultimately, I hope our
whole county will see fit to vote
a supplemental tax.
(2) I will work for one consoli
dated High School in the Aber
deen-West End area.
(3) I will work for the contin
ued improvement of our schools
in Moore County.
The authorities whom I have
consulted are in agreement that
our students would be greatly
benefited by one consolidated
high school in the Aberdeen-Pine-
hurst-Southern Pines-West End
school districts, provided we
maintain the tax supplement vo
ted in these districts. All these
four districts have at least 25
cents per $100 evaluation,under
the new, higher county-wide val
uations. i
Merger with the county system
is easily accomplished by request
of City administrative units after
agreement on a basis for a mer
ger and with the approval of
County and State Boards of Edu
cation. The laws already enacted
permit this to be done immedi
ately and plans started for our
consolidated high school. No vote
is required by the people but our
citizens should make their wishes
known now to their local boards
by writing or in person.
After conferring further with
various members of our state leg
islature, it seems apparent that
recent mergers of County and
City Boards of Education, such as
Mecklenburg and Forsyth Coun
ties make it probable that all City
Administrative units will be abol
ished by legislative action in the
near future. Why not proceed in
our county with plans that will fit
into the thinking of our legisla- i
tors?
Our Southern Pines Board of ,
Education openly admits that the
reason they do not wish a survey
by our State Board of Education
is that their recommendations are
essentially what I have outlined
in my platform. Is this the same
reason we have not had the sur
vey by the Peabody group?
The combination of Pinehurst-
Southern Pines or Aberdeen-
Pinehurst-Southern Pines dis
tricts into a separate administra
tive unit would be a step in the
right direction but legally the
process is extremely complicated
if even possible, and still is short
of what experts say should be our
ultimate goal.
We should have only two inter
ests in mind: (1) the best quality
education available and (2) the
wisest-expenditure of our taxpay
ers’ money.
