Aircraft Manufacturing Firm Will
Locate In Ellerbe - Norman Area
The Florida aircraft firm
which had been considering
Moore county, among others, as
a site for a manufacturing plant
announced last Thursday it
would set up its headquarters
and build its plant between El
lerbe and Norman, in IliclBBond
county.
A five-acre tract has been sel
ected there, according to the an
nouncement by Willard Olson,
head of the firm.
Details of the financing were
not included in the announcment.
However, on his visit to Moore,
when the counny commissioners
agreed to give him a site on coun
ty land adjoining the airport, he
indicated construction would
have to be financed 80 per cent
through the Small Business Ad
ministration. The other 20 per
cent was to be raised locally and
local stock purchases of $300,000
were also asked.
Businessmen of Ellerbe and
Norman were reported to be well
along on pledges to buy stock,
with about $60,000 pledged last
week and the local campaign con
tinuing.
Olson said he will manufacture
a small three-to-four place air
craft. popular in Europe, for
which he has the exclusive U. S.
franchise, to be made primarily of
plywood and dacron. He estima
ted that about 60 persons would
be employed during the first year
in the highly mechanized opera
tion, and that 300 planes would
be produced and shipped out dur
ing the year.
Olson is president of Olson In
dustries, Inc., of Sarasota. of
which the new firm, Olson Air
craft Corp., of Venice, Fla. is a
subsidiary.

Mr. and Mrs. Fleyd Harold
Upole announce the engagement
of their daughter, Sherrie Susan,
to Mr. Young Michael O’Connor
of Charlotte and Chapel Hill. The
wedding will be on August 22,
New Grandson
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Monroe were
advised by cable Monday of the
birth of a grandson, Clement
Dudley Monroe, bom to Captain
and Mrs. John Monroe of the
United States Force stationed at
Rhein Main, Germany. The baby
was bom August 10.
Supply Ministers
Dr. Leslie Bullock of St. An
drews College conducted the Sun
day morning worship service at
the Presbyterian Church. The
Presbyterians will not have the
regular 11 o’clock service this
Slmday to give the members an
opportunity to worship with
other congregations. The Rev.
Lacy McDuffie will supply the
Jackson Springs Church while
the Rev. Tom Keman is on vaca
tion. There will also be services
at the West End Baptist and
Methodist Churches.
Get - Together
The Ellington family had a get-
together Saturday evening at the
home of Mrs. Cyms Donaldson
with the Terrell Grahams as co
hosts. The family also celebrated
the birthday of Daniel Graham
with a cake made by his sister,
Macy. Among the 15 present to
enjoy the charcoal steaks were
the Rev. and Mrs. Budd Ellington
with Mac, Nancy and Mark, of
Hendersonville.
Conduct Services
The Rev. Mr. Ellington con
ducted the Homecoming services
Sunday at Bethel Church at New
London, which is a former charge
from 1958-1961. Attending the
service from this community were
the Marvin Pooles, the Donald
sons and the Grahams.
The Ellingtons are vacationing
for two weeks with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Poole and
he is the pastor of the Balfour
and Moore’s Grove Methodist
Churches.
Mr. and Mrs. Terrell Graham
visited the Ellingtons at Hender
sonville last weekend, and they
were also over-night guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Wyatt Nance and
family in Charlotte. Mrs. Nance
is remembered in this communi
ty as the former Miss Ruby
Poole.
Recreation Program
The summer recreation pra'-
gram continued Tuesday with
swimming instruction given by
Miss Betsy Grier at the Legion
Hut Lake each day.
Falls From Truck
Ray Atkins, 14, fell from a
truck Friday while working in
tobacco for Carlton Smith, fract
ured his pelvis and broke an
ankle. According to his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Atkins, he is
resting comfortably at Moore Me
morial Hospital.
Bride-Elect Honored
Miss Judith Ann Fletcher,
bride-elect, was honored' at a
luncheon on Friday with Misses
Marcia Hudson and Anne Hall eis
hostesses at the Hall home in
Belmont. Judith, who teaches in
Belmont, is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. J. B. Fletcher of Union
Grove and will marry William E.
Jackson, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs.
Jackson of West End, on Satur
day evening at 7 o’clock at the
Grassy Knob Baptist Church in
Union Grove.

Libba Johnson had a recent
week’s visit in Lenior with her
Salem Academy roommate, Har
riet Farthing. Harriet came home
with Libba and joined Mrs. W. A.
Johnson and Mrs. W. A. Johnson^
Jr., Libba and William, on a trip
to the mountains which included
a visit with Mark who is at
Camp Arrowhead near Hender
sonville.
Fire Chief J. B. Barnette left
Sunday for Michigan to get a new
fire truck. This additional truck
will make it possible to give ade
quate fire protection to the sur-
roimding areas of West End. Ad
ditional space is under construc
tion at the Town Hall to have
the new truck.
Ronnie Luck had a nice birth
day present in July from his
grandfather, J. B. Barnette—a
pony. 'The pony has a barn at
the Barnette’s and children are
lined up there in the afternoon
to take turns for a ride.
The Marvin Pooles have sun
flowers almost like trees and al
most one-quarter of an acre of
them. The sun flowers are
thoughtful to turn their faces
towards the Poole garden so they
can fully enjoy the beauty.
Lovers of wildlife, the Pooles are
looking forward to a large flock
of birds in the fall.
J. Atwood Whitman of Carth
age spoke to the Lion’s Club on
Thursday night on the history of
the development of Communism.
Mr. and Mrs. Hobson Tucker
visited relatives in Charlotte for
the weekend.
Betty Conrad, of Charlotte,
spent this weekend with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Z. B. Con
rad.
Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Graham of
Jackson Springs, with Mr. and
Mrs. John Blanchard of Charlotte,
are vacationing in Chicago.
Laura Auman is spending this
week in Columbia, S. C. as the
guest of Helen Timmons.
