Woman Bound
On 2nd Degree
Murder Charge
Probable cause against Reba
Ann Williams of Southern Pines
was found on a charge of murder
in the second degree in Moore
recorder’s court at Carthage
Monday.
A bond of $5,000 had previous
ly been set by a Carthage jus
tice of the peace, which Judge J.
Vance Rowe on Monday upped
to $10,000. This was academic
however, since the young Negro
woman had made no attempt to
setrure release under bond, but
had remained in Moore County
jail since her arrest for the fatal
shooting of her husband May 23
The defendant took the stand
Monday to state that her hus
band, Eli Williams, had fought
and beat her and “threatened her
life” in the woods near their
dwelling in “Lost City,” near
West Southern Pines. After they
had gone to the house and Wil
liams was sitting on the porch
with other persons, she said she
went to a room in the house, got
a shotgun and returned to kill
him with one blast.
Chief Deputy Sheriff H. H.
Grimm testified that she said
soon after the shooting that she
“didn’t know why she did it,”
also that in his opinion she had
been drinking.
She was returned to Moore
County jail to await grand jury
action at next week’s regular
criminal term.
One Defendant
Bound Over In
MH-30 Larceny
Probable cause was found
against James Jones, 43, of Shan
non Rt. 1 in Moore Recorder’s
Court Monday at Carthage on
a charge of breaking and enter
ing the Olin-Matheson Chemical
Co. at Aberdeen and larceny of
several hundred dollars’ worth
of MH-30, a tobacco spray.
Jones was bound over to the
August 17 term of Moore Su
perior Court under bond of $5,-
000.
Cases were continued by the
State against Joe Scott, also of
Shannon Rt. 1, who is similarly
charged, and Nick Hunt of Red
Springs RED, charged with re
ceiving.
Arrests of the three Hoke
County men followed the theft
of 150 gallons, or nearly $2,700
worth of MH-30, in one-and five-
gallon cans. Most of the spray,
which retails for $17.50 a gallon,
has been recovered by officers in
Hoke, Robeson and Yadkin coun
ties. Some was found in Jones
car, and some hidden on his home
farm and another farm which
he leases, according ts testimony
of Deputy Sheriff H. H. Grimm.
